First major film that uses CGI...
Why isn't there already another post/thread about this?

What was the CGI? The only thing I could tell that was computer-animated was The Gunslinger's interface.

I think that's probably it.
Well, most people are idiots with bad taste...so there!
The pixelized subjective camera shots with the gunslinger robot were evidently generated utilizing the rather primitive (by contemporary standards) available digital technology.
shareWhat about Mary Poppins?

I'm not familiar with "Mary Poppins". Can you elaborate?

In the "Jolly Holiday" walk in the park scene in Mary Poppins, the actors perform in front of an animated background with animated characters. This was back in 1964.
You can also go back to Anchors Aweigh (1944) to see Gene Kelly dance with Tom and Jerry.

Conventional film animation with or without live action isn't computer generated imagery.
shareRather unlikely.
Much easier to create an optical effect with mirrors.
I remember the same pixelizer is used on variety shows in 70's. It can create pixelized background when singer sang. But viewers got bored after seeing just a few times.
shareI seem to also recall seeing such "effects" back in the day. The TV producers probably saw them as "psychedelic" (more appropriate for the late 60s).
shareYou can also see patterns of triangles and hexagons dancing around on screens in the control room
This is obviously CGI

It seems that the creators of the movie wanted to put something fancy-looking on the computer screens. But because nearly all computers at that time were text-only, they did not have a concept of what to actually put on the screen, so i guess that's why they went for this screen-saver like thing.
As an interesting bit of trivia, the graphical user interface (GUI) which stands for meaningful shapes and buttons like you have in Windows today was actually invented in 1973, but it didn't make its way into any popular consumer products for another 10 years. So we can excuse the filmmakers for not putting anything that made sense on the computer screens.

As I mentioned in a earlier post The Andromeda Strain (1971) had what looked to me like computer graphics

I thought P.E.T.A. meant People Eating Tasty Animals
There were films in the 1960s that used primitive CGI techniques but Westworld seems to be the first major movie.
It's that man again!!
