the brass ASSUMING serpico was gay

curious if the brass ever really thought serpico was gay...i get it that back then, to the other cops if you're an avid reader, are reading a book about ballet, and dress like serpico did you could be perceived as gay...

but they must've known that serpico was married several times, was constantly dating hotties, and all that...

it seems the brass went from 0-to-gay in 1 second flat and it just seemed dumb to me...

it is better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it

if you're talking about the bathroom scene, i just wrote that off as a boss who was very old school and just didn't like serpico....to your point, anyone who knew him at all would know he wasn't gay.

reply

I didn´t think he dressed gay at all. People did dress like that in the 70´s.

If it harms none, do what thou wilt.

Everyone didn't dress like Serpico in the 60's and 70's when this took place. He was considered weird, a hippie/hipster of sorts to the straight laced typical men of that era. Kinda like in today's era where you see the "metro-sexual's" and the "hipsters" a lot of men do consider men who dress in those styles to be odd/gay even if it's obvious that they are not. They are just simply different.

What 1970s? He joined the force in 1959, look at some of the outfits at the ceremony and the rest of the outfits during the film and the Hosp scenes.

I love when the.... not commissioner, the old guy though, when he starts "Did you know Serpico is a fag?"

I have nothing against the gay community, I just love how desperate piggies can get.

reply

The commissioner thinks Serpico is gay when he sees him joking with someone in a high pitched voice and spins off into the bathroom. I think Serpico had a different look than the other cops, the commissioner didn't like him for that reason alone.

That bit in the Men's room reminds of when I worked at Paramount Pics NYC HQ (1981 to 1986) in the Computer rm
There were windows that faced some of the apt houses in the Columbus Cir area.
I used to hear stories about some of the SEXY things they had seen with the binoculars they kept in the Boss's office. All I ever got was some guy in his bath.

Serpico was a bit of a loner, somewhat different, and hardly your typical cop, so when he does those ballet moves the stuffed shirts got even angrier. Did that semi-Nazi officer really think Serpico was gay? Maybe. Some small-minded persons accuse non-conformists, so maybe he really believed that nonsense in the bathroom.

reply

Agreed. I bet that's how it was for a loner like Frank.

I caught it on Netflix the other night for the first time since I was a kid. I was hoping he'd call Serpico a SLACKER! (Didn't he EVER have hair?)

I saw it as a way of discrediting him and isolating him. He was already different and not playing ball so anything to push him further to the edges would have been the plan.

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.
