So at the very end we see Baron Samedi riding on the front of the train, given we last saw him being thrown into the coffin full of snakes by Bond, does this mean he surived or it is a meta trick? For me I go for the latter option.
I think he survives. I think most of the voodoo in the film is a cover-up for Kananga's doings. However, within the context of the film, I think the only real voodoo element is Baron Samedi. He's referred to early on in the film as the Man Who Cannot Die. That final shot is one of the creepiest things I can possibly think of!
I like it too. Just saw the film for the first time in many years this past weekend, and I was, however, surprised that Samedi is "killed off" in that fashion. Seems like a lot of build up with no payoff. Kind of disappointing because Holder was the character I most remembered from the film.
So, does he actually survive? My older brother and his friend feel that it's not a "real" moment, and we (the audience) are supposed to realize this. My brother claims that he, in fact, always knew this, even as a child when we would watch it on tv.
In a film that's filled with mysticism, I believe it's "real", at least in the sense that Samedi is, in fact, on the train. We never really see him die. Sure, we could explain the events, such as Solitaire's tarot "power", as being "fake", but the film is clearly trying to walk a thin line here. Besides, is it ever explained how Samedi's dummy works? That thing was completely lifelike!
I think he's really on the front of the train as well. As I said in my previous post, he seems to be the only real voodoo element of the film, the rest being a cover-up. I was still in single digits when I saw this film and the ending scared me so much I had to sleep on a mattress on my parents' bedroom floor! Think I was about 5 or 6.
Emblematic of most of the Moore films. It's all just for fun, right? Go for the gag even if it makes no sense or even ruins the potential for a cool spy movie. Absolutely a meta trick. They didn't care. Fits the write-as-you-go feel of the movie.
I hate this movie but I give it a 4.5/10 for a few decent scenes. The Moore Bonds devolve much in the same way the Freddy Kruger films did.
