Yaphet Kotto Doesn't Want To See A Black 007

Under Daniel Craig, James Bond's evolution from a cold-hearted, borderline psychotic killer to a less dashing, more vulnerable and emotional human has struck a chord with so many 007 fans that they don’t want his run to stop. Some believe that the perfect way to move forward is to cast Idris Elba as the first black Bond, but legendary Live And Let Die antagonist Yaphet Kotto believes that James Bond should always be white.

The 75-year-old Kotto, who portrayed Dr. Kananga/Mr. Big opposite Roger Moore’s 007 in the 1973 spy flick, spoke to The Big Issue about his feelings regarding Bond potentially being black and he is adamant that shouldn’t occur. Kotto explained:
He cannot be black. Political correctness be damned. James Bond was established by Ian Fleming as a white character, played by white actors. Play 003 or 006, but cannot be 007. A lot of people say we should be allowed to play everything. Don’t be ridiculous … Black men should stop trying to play roles created by whites. These roles are not written for black men.

The Wire and Luther star has been singled out by many as the perfect candidate if producers decided to cast a black actor as James Bond. The statuesque 42-year-old has the presence, charisma, and intensity to do the character justice, while he’s also undoubtedly handsome and looks rather spiffy in a suit and tie. He probably looks right a home with a martini in his hands, too.

Idris Elba himself has also insisted that he would be open to playing the coveted part, which isn’t a surprise considering the impact that it would obviously have on his career. However, he has also kept his distance from ever confirming that he’s even held discussions with Bond producers about replacing Daniel Craig when the current 007’s contract runs out. In fact, earlier this week, Elba told a British Film Institute audience, via The Hollywood Reporter, that he blamed Craig for starting the rumors that he was even in the running, while he also noted that the huge hype surrounding his potential casting has probably all but ruined his chances of ever portraying the iconic spy.

Purists are adamant that James Bond should remain as close to Ian Fleming’s original creation as possible. Just last month, Roger Moore accidentally got himself caught up in a slight race-row after the Daily Mail alleged that he said Idris Elba couldn’t play James Bond because he was not "English-English," something that he later clarified on Twitter.

The 87-year-old's remarks prove just how sensitive this subject is. While you can understand why diehard fans want the character to remain as close to the source material as possible, others will argue that Bond has now developed into such a pop culture phenomenon that he should continue to evolve with the times. However, at the moment, this conversation is redundant as Daniel Craig is reportedly contracted for one more film after this winter’s Spectre, the teaser trailer for which suggests that it will be just as moody, pensive, and engrossing as 2012’s Skyfall.

Regardless of race, by the time Craig is done Idris Elba will probably be too old for the role anyway.

He's not the only one. Just keep Bond out of this ongoing moronic PC point scoring game.

OK, you do get that Idris Elba is actually a very good actor? It's not like they're trying to cast Kevin Hart as Bond. If Idris is the best person for the job, then not casting him for his skin color would be as wrong as doing so.

The best actor who wants the role should be Bond. If it's Idris, it's Idris.

"Evolving with the times" doesn't mean suddenly turning black for no logical reason.

Exactly right. A black actor has no business playing Bond anymore than a white actor does playing Shaft.

Good for Kotto.

I'm sure many of us Bond fans have seen this latest buzz/push for there to be a female or gay 007. I keep coming across this in the press lately.

Maybe there should be a white Shaft, or a male Wicked Witch of the West?

Most people without a graduate degree realize that changing those characters so drastically turns them into something else entirely, as if there's anything wrong with who they were to begin with (being white and male is de facto racist/sexist?).

I can only hope that any attempt to use Bond as a vehicle for some kind of politically correct statement is wholly rejected by the ticket-buying public.

Felix Leiter, Secret Agent.

He works perfectly. Jeffrey Wright played him outstandingly well. Probably one of the best Leiter's since Jack Lord.

Well said TY.

I don't think it matters. A long time ago I may have felt differently but not anymore

How refreshing, an actor who respects the source material and its author, unlike todays gaggle of cucks from Hollyweird who jump thru hoops to virtue signal.

I am not totally opposed to a black Bond if the actor is truly the right actor for the part (we now have a black Moneypenny and Naomi Harris was a perfect choice for the role), what I am opposed to is hiring a black Bond just to say that there was a Black James Bond. James Bond should not operate on a quota system.

I think Bond only works as a white man. Bond is meant to come from the privileged classes, and be totally unapologetic about it. Bond would be classed as an absolute asshole were his name anything other than James Bond. But because he's Bond, we tend to love his womanising, his toffery, his stiff upper lip. He exploits his privileges and is completely shameless about it. He fits in with high society everywhere. There is nothing so privileged as an upper class white man, so that's what he has to be.
