I had not seen this in years! I just watched it and plainly Lemora was lesbian and if im not wrong, wanting Lila to be her 'girl'? a totally different spin on the older woman/younger woman lesbian relationship! very creepy movie. I like how most of it took place at night, even when Lila ran way to go meet her father.
I don't think Lemora was a lesbian! She was just interesting in drinking the girls blood! One seen in the movie shows Lemora bitting the neck and sucking the blood of a little boy. And yes, it was indeed a very creepy vampire film!
I think there was a creepy predatory pedophillic subtext to almost all Lila's interactions. This was, in my opinion, a GREAT movie. Lemora was everything I wanted in a vampire woman. She never blinked on screen, a great touch. Wnderful acting by Lesley Gilb, my candidate for the best female portrayal of a vampire ever. Too bad there aren't "Vampie" awards for vampire portrayals- she'd be the Queen.
I like your review! I read once where They said Lesley Gilb gave a wooden performance. but I think that's not true at all. she was very cool and self-contained as a vampire. The last scene where Lila gave the reverend a bite as Lemora watched, hair down and giving a evil smirk, breathing in a triumphant heavy almost orgasmic sigh showed how good she was. I would hardly call her wooden.
I love this movie! it's my favorite all-time female vampire movie too. so gothic. and yes the reverend, the ticket seller and Lila were all after more than Lila's soul!
Did you see how Lesley Gilb aka Lemora picked Lila up effortlessly and carried her up the stairs? HOW did she do that? Was it special effects or did that woman really manage to make it look so easy? There are big men that haven't been able to pull off the "effortless" strength of the vampire. And up the stairs?! Wow - maybe she really was a vampire like that other great movie about Nosferatu - Shadow of the Vampire.
Did Lesley Gilb do anything else? I can't get her wonderful gaunt staring vampire face out of my mind. Hope she reads this thread.
Lemora saved Lila from a tawdry tragic life of victimization by making her the ultimate predator. Even if it was only a dream during a church service it enpowered Lila and gave her a glimpse of how to proceed in shark infested waters.
Lesley Gilb was killed in a car crash a couple of years ago. she had not acted after this but was involved in community services and traveled the world many times.
The whole movie is aces! I have the DVD and she speaks on it along with the reverend (Richard Blackburn)
I watched it with commentary and believe it or not, she actually picked her up!
The trouble she had was when she was carrying her into a bedroom and the door had to close. She said Cheryl had to close the door with her hand briefly because she couldn't do it. If you watch that part, you can see her move her hand to close the door.
