Apperantly, You and I are the only ones who care about this MASTERPIECE anymore. The speech was almost Oscar-worth.

I think that is my favorite haunted house movie ever.

Did I mention I LOVE Steve McQueen?

reply

Wow I just saw it for the first time. Preety powerful stuff lol! It's a great film. I bet it's under-rated but shouldnt be. While the speech is very powerful, I wouldn't call it oscar-worthy. Horror film worthy all the way, but not oscar. (No offense, it's still an excellent film)

Saw this film the first time late night on BBC1 afew years ago and rewatching it as I type, by god I had forgotten how this film causes you guts to knot themselves.

Definitely underrated. Its nice to see a film that doesnt rely on copius amounts of gore and the like to get its scares.

Definitely one to add to the DVD collection!

reply

I have watched this movie many times and it still holds up. Also,
I have always felt this was one of Roddy's finest adult performances. I
Catch the film every time I can.

This is a great comedy indeed. I tried to be a bit more tolerant since it's a 1973 movie but I simply could not. I was not afraid at all. But I must admit that the story and some of the ideas worth the trouble to see it. Ok. I saw it, and never going to watch it again.

reply

COMEDY?!?!? How in the hell could you mistake this movie for a comedy? You obviously haven't see great horror movies. You also probably think slasher flicks or horror movies that use excessive amounts of gore and violence are better than horror movies were Psychological terror and what you hear rather than what you don't see is better.

I hate people like you. You pretend to watch horror flicks claiming that you find them funny. The truth is you hate them. The only reason you say you watch them for their humor is to establish some sort of credability with the people who read your tripe. People like you who will rate ANY horror movie one star and never see it. Why? Because your tiny little brain doesn't understand. And what stupid people don't understand they seek to destroy.

reply

Apparently your generation doesn't want to see vampire killers anymore, nor vampires either. All they want to see slashers running around in ski masks, hacking up young virgins.

It's even funnier when he reels into all the "Your mother was a bitch! A whore!" business.

It's like, "Calm the f#%k down, Mary. What does his mommiehave to do with anything??"

i totally agree with markos, this film can not be regarded as a serious piece of horror! its the funniest, most pathetic and farsical film EVER!
Myself and a mate first saw it about 3 years ago and we laughed so so much i was almost sick and i had to go to bed after, it was side splitting!
You cant seriously take it well, serious, surely? like the bit where the cat attacks the woman and the part where all those things fly at that man and then the fire blasts out the fireplace and stuff falls of the wall onto him (he would in reality be badly hurt) but he says something along the lines of: 'we must be careful or someone could get hurt here' how the hell are we supposed to take that? its worthy of a scene in a lesley nielsen film like airplane or similar!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

I don't think anyone could possibly call this a comedy! People get hurt and killed and it's all too convincing!
Maybe it's just me.....!

reply

Loved it1 and it was a great speech...I wanna see it again...

reply

I am going to buy it and play it for all of my friends who haven't seen it... It is VERY underrated! Very well put together... Very Smart and Erotic at times... I watched it at 3 in the morning the first time and stayed up until the sun came up... Very scary...

reply

Anyone who thinks this film is side-splittingly funny has got to be a troll.
There can be no other explanation.
I saw this movie when it originally came out in the early 1970s -- at a genuine movie theatre and it scared the hell out of myself and friends. We all agreed it was a good flick.
I watched it recently, thinking oh this is going to be a really out-dated piece. it can't possibly be like I remembered it -- but it was!
Still loved Roddy and Pamela, the atmosphere, and the frights.
Good movie -- and, as they say, they just don't make them like this anymore. Poor us.

reply

This is one of the great horror films ever and to call it a comedy goes beyond ludicrous. You are right Marge. Nothing but a couple of trolls, who wouldn't know a good horror flick if they tripped over it.

reply

Saw this movie ages ago........just "aquired" it again recently.

I visit here when I watch a new movie or an OLD one to see what other folk think and sometimes to laugh at the ridiculous/braindead comments made by some people, people who I am amazed had the intelligence to make it through the registation process!

.....now this movie was made before I was born, which for some people is a complete no-no....I see the same sort of comments about Jaws, one of the greatest suspense movies ever made, made mostly/almost solely by people who were born after the 70`s....

.....as I said I havent seen it for about 15 years until today.....and you know what I can still rememeber lines and scenes, and even single shots from it all from 15 years ago......now you tell me is that likely to happen with the majority of films made now????

..on a slighlty differnt topic now.........I never understood the naming convention of calling idiots like these two "trolls"........when philistines is so much more accurate......

...and before someone(them) picks any holes in that I don`t mean the Aegean people who settled ancient Philistia around the 12th century BC......I am of course refering to the OTHER defintion!!

Here`s hoping that Darwin was right.....and the stupid really do lose out through natural selection...tho I`ve seen no evidence of it so far.

Stir of Echoes (1999) http://imdb.com/title/tt0164181/

I was the only one to reply to your post from 20 years ago and I'll be the only one to reply this time. Do you know why? I know the secret. I know what you are, kjbeaner, the old imdb.com poster.

I just finished watching this movie for the first time and it's September 6, 2021. It's weird responding to a post that's almost old enough to drink.

This film needs more love. It’s one of the best haunted houses films ever.
