Do you think the Zuckermans were really going to eat Wilbur? Wasn't Mr. Zuckerman Fern's Uncle? So...they would know eating Wilbur would upset her, after all she went to visit him everyday.

I think on a farm and the point Fern's dad was trying to make is that the realistic thing to expect when an animal is mature, is that it will be sent for slaughter. About the only reason for keeping an animal would be for breeding purposes. If you are a chicken or cow you are pretty lucky because you can continue to make eggs and milk. But a pig? Off to the slaughterhouse
BTW I loved this book (still do).
