Templeton's ending fate

Probably a silly question, but I've always wondered the ending for Templeton was changed in the film. As you know, Wilbur promises Templeton first dibs on on his meals if he retrieves the egg sac. In the book, he merely becomes very fat as a result of overeating. While in the movie, he got a wife and kids. Any guess as to why the ending was changed? Just curious.

It's Hollywood adding a "good ending".

It was meant to be a happy ending for his character.
