Will There Ever Be A Decent Region 1 DVD?

Is there any news of an upcoming new transfer to region 1 DVD? The last release is out of print and it really wasn't very good in the first place. I've read the european one is a little better and also contains some good special features. I feel like this film always goes ignored..at least in North America.

perhaps this would be a good time for you to get a region-free DVD player and enjoy true freedom

I don't know much about the different regions, but if my DVD player can play region 0 does that mean it is region-free? Or do region 0 DVDs work in all DVD players?

a Region 0 DVD is region-free and will play in all players that support its video format (NTSC/PAL)

many players have "secret" codes that can be used to unlock region restrictions, allowing an American player (R1) to play a DVD from Europe (R2), for example

to use an old-school TV, the DVD player has to be able to output video in the TVs format (NTSC/PAL), though the new flat screen TVs/monitors don't care if output is NTSC or PAL. however, a given player may or may not read DVDs encoded in both formats, regardless of region issues

here's a site where you can lookup your DVD player(s) and see if there are known codes that will unlock them: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

Hey thanks for explaining all this. I wish I'd known about the possibilities all these years. So many foreign discs I would have loved to own.

Just need to double check, could this damage my DVD player or cause my Region 1 discs to become unplayable?

I hope my machine is listed and has a code. Thanks for the link and I really appreciate the help.

You won't cause harm if your DVD player has a secret menu to manage region settings. At most, you might lock out Region 1 accidentally, in which case, you'll just have to go back into the menu and re-enable it.

Sometimes people get into replacing chips or the DVD player's internal software, which is another matter entirely, and poses certain risks.
