The two sisters seemed a bit chilling. Maybe they taken a dislike to John, remember the scene where they were laughing wildly at the thought of John's death.

I think, they didn't laugh at the thought of Johns death. Remember, one of them had one of the small family pictures in her hands, so they probably laughed about an odd family story or whatever. Maybe it was even just Johns imagination, he thought from the start the two were devious. The scene indeed suggested that the two sisters were evil, but in reality they were not.

I agree, this was just a way of making us think that the sisters wree evil in a way when they were not
