To Italian speakers
There's quite a bit of Italian in this movie that goes untranslated. Does knowing Italian add anything to your enjoyment/understanding of the movie?
shareThe first time I saw it, I didn't understand any Italian. Several years passed before I watched it again, during which time I lived in Italy (not because of the film!), so the second time round, I understood everything. It is incidental that the first time I hated it and the second time I loved it. Anyway, I'd say that most of the Italian dialogue is not really crucial to the plot, and could be guessed at from context, apart from in the very last scenes (see this other thread: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069995/board/nest/150576915), but it's nice to be able to follow what's going on. Donald Sutherland's Italian is not bad, either!
