This is one crappy movie!
Boring, illogical, tries to be pretentious but even fails at this. Easily one of the worst films of the 1970s.

shareIf you find this movie to be boring, you were simply out of your league intellectually and emotionally when watching it. I pity you.
shareAgreed. XJW80, you probably think that just because it was made a long time ago that it's automatically rubbish. What do you consider a 'good' film? 'Terminator'?
shareTook me 5 sittings to watch it. I wasn't giving up because it's supposed to be a classic, but in the end I thought it was boring and lacked cohesion. Saw a few of these back in the 70's; I think the objective was just to be confusing. Good old views of Venice though, and Julie C. was very pretty.
shareThe editing may make it seem confusing initially, but it's really quite meticulously arranged plus, of course, the sense of present, past and future collapsing into each other goes with the motif of clairvoyance.
"facts are stupid things" Ronald Reagan
I sympathize with viewers who struggle though. The film doesn't exactly spoonfeed its audience. I found it exasperating on my first viewing too (while I was still at school) and it wasn't until my second viewing a few years later I truly began to appreciate it.
shareI have no sympathy for those who are inherently ignorant and proud of it. The top poster reflects a common thread of behavior I've seen from other top posters who lash out at movies or TV shows they find "boring", "pretentious", or "pointless". I can appreciate someone like yourself for admitting that you struggled upon your first viewing to comprehend the various themes and narratives, but at least you became aware of it. I myself was enthralled upon my first viewing. It is indeed an innovative and provocative film that isn't aimed to please or reveal itself following conventional Hollywood movie formulas.
shareHow do you try and fail to be pretentious? Surely pretentiousness is something you achieve by trying and failing to achieve something else, not something you would actively seek to achieve. I'm not sure I would agree but I think you simply mean to day the movie was pretentious.
shareTo xJW80.....if you are going to make a statement like this it would be nice if you explain why you feel like this? Otherwise it makes you look trollish and immature ....
shareit is a pretty silly film. The ending is particularly absurd.
shareI know you think this now, but seriously, give it another try a few years down the line. This was my reaction on first viewing. For some reason, I rewatched it several years later and I was captivated.
I'd say the difference between 1st and second viewings was that the first time round I was expecting an amazing suspense story, but I didn't get it, so the second time I focused on what I was seeing and feeling, and I realized it was a great artistic film. It's more about the atmosphere and the photography than drama, and all the initially incomprehensible bits make more sense when you watch it in the knowledge of what will happen later.
