bizarre sex scene!

is it just me or is the sex scene just a little gratuitous in this film? I think this is a masterpiece, don't get me wrong. But what's the sex scene doing for the story...mamet are you out there?

reply

totally gratuitous i would say.

What purpose does any scene serve in any film? It helps to establish mood, intimacy, and furthers the characterization etc. As Nicolas Roeg himself said, without the sex scene what you basically have is just a bunch of scenes of a couple arguing a lot. I can think of many far less explicit sex scenes that are far more gratuitous in terms of their plot function, such as the James Bond films for instance.

reply

at least two people on this thread should stay away from nicholas roeg movies.

I thought it was so cool that they'd bathed and were sparkling clean before they loved each other, and were likely smelling like sex when they went to dinner.

Why ain't you at the garden party you heathen?
