More influential than Star Wars

Star Wars seems to get all the credit in George Lucas’s filmography of ushering in the modern era of blockbuster action-sci-fi-adventure movies, but I would argue that American Graffiti has had even more of an impact with subsequent films in the indie comedy-drama genre, usually involving teens and young adults and a cleaver soundtrack, having similar styles/feels with focus mostly being on characters hanging out and discussing life such as Dazed & Confused, Breaking Away, John Hughes’ movies, Superbad, Everybody Wants Some, Almost Famous, Licorice Pizza, Singles, the list goes on.

I am not sure I would say "more influential" but I would certainly say "equally influential."

Some directors (Hitchcock, Spielberg, Scorsese) give their fans many, many important and classic films. It would seem that George Lucas influenced movies forever with just two: American Graffiti and Star Wars.

Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Indiana Jones series was Lucas' idea, but he rather "shared it" with Steven Spielberg and they merged it into their "joint project." That said, I suppose that Indiana Jones is really an offshoot OF Star Wars what with Harrison Ford as the star, John Williams doing the music, and a "fantastic adventure" approach well in accord with Star Wars.

Good that you should mention Licorice Pizza. Its writer-director, Paul Thomas Anderson, has cited American Graffiti as an influence to the film, but he actually CITED American Graffiti right at the beginning of Licorice Pizza, with an "ode to the boy's room cherry bomb" scene. PTA also used the "neon green on black" color structure of the credits from American Graffiiti for his film.
