I believe Lucas created Curt in his own image.

I don't think it's Terry, because the info at the end credits say that Terry was reported missing in Vietnam. I've also heard, like the next poster, that Lucas has said that Curt was the one most like himself. And if you watch the little-seen sequel to American Graffiti. it's made clear that Terry is no longer around. Happy Holidays to all!
