Police Story-Video or DVD availability? - Police Story (1973) Discussion

I have never seen a US (NTSC) vhs or dvd of the Wambaugh inspired Police Story series. I do know that there are at least 5 or 6 that were released on PAL format vhs: A CRY FOR JUSTICE.........CONFESSIONS OF A LADYCOP.....STIGMA (probably the best ever made).....THE BROKEN BADGE.......and possibly: MAN ON A STRING.

As a retired CA cop (35+ yrs.) I was amazed by the reality and intensity of the enitre series. I have never seen anything like it............before or after the series was aired. HILL ST. BLUES and NYPD BLUE were OK but were too "Hollywood" for my taste.

If you discover a source for vhs or dvd (ntsc/US region) or know if/when the series is being aired, please let me know.

Who can we contact to get those shows out on DVD? If drivel like "Lost in Space", and "The Brady Bunch" can be released in their entirety, then a quality program like "Police Story" ought to be out there too.

There may have been other reairings of the show but the last I recall was on A&E way back in it's early days. I have the following episodes from those airings and am transferring to dvd. Will trade for any others. By the way, SWAT had a great theme song, but I liked Police Story's much better.

Hey Jim
I hear you about NYPD Blue. I was a cop in the 80s and 90s and thought that it was not very realistic. Hill Street, I thought was much more realistic, but much of the storyline and some of the drama was a bit Hollywood. I LOVE Police Story. I remember it coming on A & E back in the mid 90s and it brought me back to when I was a kid watching it.

Do not know if anyone ever answered your question but Amazon starting selling season 1, in 2011. None of the other seasons have made it to DVD as of June 2015.

I bought Pressure Point on VHS yesterday as a second-hand VHS here in Finland. In Finland some episodes were released as VHS, but I don´t know in what amount they are still available. Probably as rental versions or in second hand shops.

From a second hand VHS and DVD shop here in Finland at least today (26.4.05) there was two Poilce Story VHS available for only 2€, a piece. They were Confessions Of A Lady Cop and No Margin For Error.

It amazes me how many old TV shows are available today, but not this one. As a kid it was my favorite show, and I hum the soundtrack to this day. I would buy every episode in a heart beat.

Thomas, I was able to buy the original POLICE STORY souldtrack (by Jerry Goldsmith) on eBay a couple of months ago. Only 3000 were produced in this limited edition and I got #1157 It's not as good as finding a vhs or dvd.......but it's great to have something. I was happy to spend the $30 to get it.

I think the same thing than you. When I was young in France, Police-Story was very famous. If you get the chance to have information about DVD's please keep me posted. I am strongly looking for DVD's on "The Immortal" and "Hunter" with James Franciscus. Last thing strange, Wild Wild West are not in DVD's yet !

I have taped some episodes from the tv. back in the 80s, it was on A/E. I am looking for more episodes as well.

Hi there,
I too love Police Story and it was one of those series that was released here in the UK very quietly in the early 1970's and picked up a cult following by word of mouth. Me and my mates ( we were teenagers then ) would all pester our parents to stop up late to watch Police Story and we would then discuss the episode at school the following day. I only have 1 episode on video at the mo which my son, who is car mad loves, as it has a good car chase in it. This brings me to my request. Can you or anyone out there remember the episode where a veteran cop takes a rookie policewoman our with him, is unimpressed by her to start off with, but then survives her 90mph chase of a drunk driver. They then join the pursuit of 2 killers who have killed various people including a border guard and knocked a Police motorcyclist off his bike. There is a tremendous car chase and shootout at the end where the veteran cop gets shot but his partner saves him ( I think? ) If anybody knows what this episode is called or has a copy of it I would love the chance to obtain a copy. I wrote to Joseph Wambaugh himself and asked him about the Police Story being put on DVD. Here is his short reply to me:

Dear Steve,

The Police Story owner is working on DVD. His name is David Gerber at Fox TV studios.

All Best Wishes, Joseph Wambaugh.

So there we are for now. It seems that maybe they are serious about finally making DVD's of the series!!!!

Who knows when....but

If we can find out how to contact David Gerber at Fox, maybe we can find out!

Hi Steve,

Have you contacted David Gerber at Fox TV studios yet? If I'm not mistaken, I believe Sony Pictures owns the copyrights to all of the Police Story episodes. Assuming that's the case, it's also possible that Sony might have granted a license to David Gerber for a DVD release. Let me know what you find out. I would be willing to pay top dollar for a boxed set of every episode.

I too wrote to Mr. Wambaugh and he said the rights belong to David Gerber. The IMDB shows Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to hold the rights. I would buy every show of the 178 episodes od DVD for $$$$.

David Gerber Productions is in Hollywood CA. Everybody keep trying. As we all know there are a lot of aweful TV shows on DVD.

I would love to see the made for TV movies from the 1980's released on DVD.

The first season of Police Woman is on DVD, AND the pilot episode was an episode of Police Story, so at least that one IS on DVD

I rented the Police Woman DVD because I was in the mood for some 70s cop cheese but I was really surprised at how well written it was, especially the Police Story pilot - it really is the forebear of the better modern police dramas like NYPD Blue and The Wire, and if properly marketed as such, it could do well on DVD.

If They're releasing Gomer Pyle Season 1 this month they sure as *beep* better release Police Story in 2007!! Great show with revolving and new characters, so sometimes (as in real life) the main police character would get bumped off. (New) added 4/7/2011...Here we are over 4 years later and Still nothing...TIHS KCUF!!

apparently sony pictures h/e is looking after the rights. police woman with angie dickinson - which is a by-product of police story is now out. you'd think that police story was next! everybody - send them a friendly email. dont give a rats rectum for angie dickinson!

Sony is currently polling for tv shows to put on DVD and Police Story is on the list. Go to www.sonypictures.com/homevideo/tvondvd and scroll down to the link that says "Vote for your favorite tv show". It currently is polling fourth, so please go vote.
