I haven't seen them recently, but I think I can remember being very impressed by The Hammer of God. It stays true to the short story, and Kenneth More is brilliant as always. The new Father Brown is nice to look at, but is really not faithful to the original material, just like the latest Agatha Christie productions.
shareOh yes, I like "The Hammer of God" as well. Author John Dickson Carr was inspired by the Father Brown mysteries, and used the idea of this story for one of his short stories.
I haven't seen the new Father Brown mysteries or the newest Agatha Christie adaptations.
I did catch most of the Midsomer Murder mysteries this past winter, but haven't really been watching them much lately.

Hello again - can you tell me the name of the short story by Dickson Carr? He was brilliant, just brilliant! The golden age mysteries have so much more to offer than today's graphic violence and cliché ridden stories of sociopathic serial killers. I love the elegance of Dickson Carr, Christie and Chesterton.
Midsomer Murders was a rare gem in the days of John Nettles. I haven't watched them lately myself, but I have the whole series except for a box or two, and spoil myself with my favorite episodes some nights - and the dark months of the year is a good time to rewatch these perfect balanced drama-comedy stories.
I'm trying to remember the name. If you check wikepedia, they have a list of all his novels, short story collections, etc. You could maybe just try to check out as many of those books as you can find (use interlibrary loans if necessary). I'm sure you will stumble upon that story sooner or later.
I agree with you about golden age mysteries as compared to today's tiresome "mysteries".
I'll revisit Midsomer Murders probably next winter.

Thank you for your nice reply! I think I will do just that, check the publication list of Dickson Carr and start a serious reading marathon this summer! :-) As he was a highly productive author, it's going to be very entertaining. I've read his most famous novels, but none I think, of the short stories. I grew up with my parents book collection of the classics, and paperbacks of Simenon, Carr and Christie. I will have to check if maybe they still have some of the old Carr books ...
shareI finally came back to this board, after not stopping here for about two years. I hope you had a chance to track down some of the Carr books....
