The Top Secret Papers

Ya know, I have seen this movie more times than I can count in 33 years and never really understood what the deal with the "Top Secret" papers was. And gauging from both Roger Ebert's review and Babs' own commentary on the DVD she didn't either.

But I finally figured it out! Considering Mr. Jones' comment in the courtroom scene at the end that he's from the government and Mr. Smith (the guy with the papers in the first place) says "the public has a right to know!" this is clearly a thinly veiled reference to The Pentagon Papers. A Vietnam-era controversy (which is even appropriate today) involved the publication of secret DoD papers on Vietnam in the New York Times. The controversy itself was an early factor in the unravelling of the Nixon Administration.

At last, I get it!

That's interesting... Peter B. didn't mention a thing about it in the commentary, though. His comments were pretty good too.

Yes I have seen the movie millions of times as well and yes own the VHS movie. Here is my opinion of the Top Secret Papers in one the plaid attache cases.

First since the airport Mr. Smith has the bag and is trying to go somewhere to let people know about the government Top Secret Documents that yes we can assume are from the Pentagon, according to what Mr. Jones and Mr. Smith said in the courtroom. Mr. Jones however is after Mr. Smith to get the top secret government documents back from Mr. Smith and there becomes complications at the hotel where Howard and Eunice and Judy and Mrs. Von Haskins is staying. Yes Mrs. Von Haskins is played by Mabel Albertson who plays Phyllis Stevens, Darrins mother on Bewitched.

The complications are there are 4 or more suitcases of the same kind at the same hotel where theres musical rooms in process of Mr. Jones trying to get the government documents from Mr. Smith and Harry the hotel detective and Fritz the Hotel Clerk and Assistant Manager trying to get the jewels from Mrs. Von Haskins.

However at the end after the courtroom time and at the airport where Eunice leaves with Mr. Larabee, Fritz has a disquise escaping since he was part of the jewelery heist for the Dorella Street fencing group along with Harry. Harry and the Dorella Street gang got jailed after the courtroom scene. Plus also Mr. Jones has the bag and Mr. Smith again is trying to get it back that time and Judy and Howard both on their way to the plane says look at that.

I think that Peter B just didn't have anything else to put in that fourth bag, so he decided to put official-looking papers in it. Let's ask him.

The top secret papers are nothing. They are what is called a McGuffin. That is all. A devise to move the story along and carrying no true meaning. The writers needs to create something to writes 'towards' so they created the top secret papers.

That's all...

All we're really told about those papers in the screenplay is that they are top secret government papers and personally, I think any more detail is pretty irrelevant and for you to read all of that into it just strikes me as odd because it seems like such a minor, minor part of the story. Who cares?
