Has anyone ever tracked the plaid cases?

Every time I watch this thing, I start trying to follow each one from start to finish (when Howard and Judy stuff them all into the delivery bike and you can no longer follow each one), but I always get distracted by the madcap action and dialogue and strike out. I'd be interested in whether this can actually be done and if so, were there any continuity errors?

We had to do this for English class yesterday and today. It's hard, but I got most of them. I don't have the paper, we had to write an essay on the back (examples of the humor found in the movie) and turn it in.

Oh em gee this movie is so funny. :P

Crown's mine, bitch!

I've tried a couple of times. But, every time I get distracted by the fact that Judy's clothes keep changing throughout the movie, yet she doesn't have her own suitcase. How is this possible?!?!

Yes I have seen the movie many times and own the VHS cassette and know the movie very well and all the identical plaid cases

A: That one has the government top secret documents that Mr. Smith is trying to let the people or public know about that the government is keeping top secret and Mr. Jones the government man is after them.

B: That one has millionaire Mrs. Von Hasken's(actrees is Mabel Albertson who plays Darrin's mother Phyllis Stephens on Bewitched), valuable jewels in it, that Fritz the hotel clerk and Harry the house detective try to steal to deliver to a three Dorella Street Crooks that belong to a fencing operation

C: Those are Howard Bannisters geological rocks that he has to present to Mr. Larabee

D: Is Judy Maxwells clothing that Mr. Jones made a crack about government underwear.

E plus: Other identical suitcases with clothes and other things.

At the hotel, on the 17th floor, Mr. Jones was trying to get the government documents away from Mr. Smith. Plus Harry was trying to steal Mrs. Von Haskins jewels from her room as well and all those cases at times before leaving the hotel were playing or going about musical rooms.

Howard and Mr. Larabee at Mr. Larabees home got the underwear and top secret documents and the stolen jewels and at the Dorella Street Fence place ghetto area, Harry and the Dorella street crooks along with Eunice kidnapped got the rocks that belonged to Howard.

That clears up all the cases but the scene in Mr. Larabees home was something when Hugh Simon was about to let the cat out of a bag, first Mr. Smith wants one case for the top secret documents, then Mr. Jones wants the top secret documents case too and then the Dorella Street Fence crooks want the jewels and Mr. Smith was something when he let a crook have it and even Judy was good at bashing a crook as well and Hugh Simon got pies in the face at that matter as well. However Howard and Judy took 7 of the cases escaping on a bike that they stole from the delivery boy.

7 OF THE CASES ? there are only 4. the papers. the rocks. the diamonds and judy's clothes. all of which they put in the box on the bike that carries pizza.

I actually tracked the plaid cases once (took notes to make sure I didn't miss anything). And yes, it actually works, no continuity errors.

Here are my notes, as best as I could figure out. The only place I'm certain I missed something is when the fire breaks out in Howard's room. Correct me if I've missed anything here:

"What's Up, Doc?" opens on Mr. Smith's bag, which contains the Top Secret documents. He takes them to the Hotel Bristol. Mr. Jones follows him. Howard Bannister takes his bag of rocks to the hotel. Judy Maxwell carries her bag, filled with underwear and encyclopedias, to the hotel as she follows a food delivery boy. Mrs. Van Hoskins arrives at the front desk with her bag of jewels, which desk clerk Fritz and hotel detective Harry want. All bags are now together inside the same hotel.

Mr. Jones steals Mrs. Van Hoskins bag from the adjoining room. Mr. Smith hides his bag in Mrs. Van Hoskins closet. Harry finds Mr. Smith's bag, steals it, and hides it under Eunice's bed next to Howard's bag. Fritz returns Howard's bag to Mrs. Van Hoskins' room while Harry stalls her. Mr. Jones waits with Mrs. Van Hoskins' bag in the vacant room 1717 as Eunice leaves Mr. Smith's bag outside Howard's door. Howard takes Mr. Smith's bag into his room, drops it in the closet, then discovers Judy and her bag in his bathroom. Harry plans to enter Mrs. Van Hoskins' room through Room 1717 and steal her bag, forcing Mr. Jones to climb out the window and scale the ledge with Mrs. Van Hoskins' bag. Harry enters Mrs. Van Hoskins' room and steals Howard's bag. Eunice discovers Judy's bag in Howard's bathroom. Mr. Smith crawls into Mrs. Van Hoskins' room to discover his bag missing from the closet, so he slips out into the hall and into Eunice's room. There's a ruckus in Howard's room, so Mr. Smith peeks in, grabs Judy's bag and slips back into his own room. Mr. Jones scales the ledge with Mrs. Van Hoskins' bag and crashes through Howard's window.

The next morning, Mr. Jones sleeps outside the hotel. Harry hides Howard's bag in the hotel basement. Mr. Smith stays awake all night with his eye on Judy's bag. Howard sleeps with Mr. Smith's bag in the charred remains of his room before being kicked out by the hotel manager. Howard accidentally takes the elevator to the roof, where Judy is asleep with Mrs. Van Hoskins' bag (which she somehow got from Mr. Jones). Howard and Judy accidentally swap bags after falling to the floor in an embrace. Howard stops by Eunice's room with Mrs. Van Hoskins' bag. Mr. Smith notices the identical bag Howard is carrying, and checks the contents of Judy's bag to reveal underwear and an encyclopedia. Harry takes Howard's bag to a group of thugs. Mr. Smith chases after Howard and Judy, as Fritz notices all the identical bags. Mr. Jones also notices all the bags. Eunice discovers Harry and the thugs with Howard's bag at the hideout. Howard and Judy arrive at Mr. Larrabee's house with Mrs. Van Hoskins' and Mr. Smith's bags, as Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones follow. Howard holds onto Mrs. Van Hoskins' bag, while Mr. Larrabee politely takes Mr. Smith's bag from Judy. Howard opens Mrs. Van Hoskins' bag to reveal her jewels, then opens Mr. Smith's bag to reveal the Top Secret documents. Mr. Smith arrives with Judy's bag and demands the other two bags. Howard slides Mr. Smith's bag over, as Mr. Jones points a gun from above and demands all three bags be thrown to him. Mr. Smith throws Judy's bag up to Mr. Jones, as Eunice, Harry and the thugs burst in with Howard's bag. Mr. Jones throws down Judy's bag, as a thug kicks Howard's bag across the floor. A scuffle ensues, so Howard and Judy grab all the bags, run out the door, and begin the chase sequence.

Now, this answer is like a year after you wrote the original post - so I guess it's useless now. But I'm gonna do this anyway, just cus it's fun.

Straight off the top of my head...ok.

(Also, this might not be in chronological order - according to the storyline in the film, but I'm just trying to make it easier to follow.)

CASES:
¤ Rocks (Howards case)
¤ Clothes & books (Judys case)
¤ Jewels (Mrs Van Hoskins case)
¤ Top secret documents (Mr Smiths case...the top secret guy)

PARTICIPANTS
¤ Howard
¤ Eunice
¤ Judy
¤ Mrs Van Hoskins
¤ Mr. Smith (Top secret guy)
¤ Mr. Jones (Golf club guy) - wants the documents
¤ Fritz - wants the jewels
¤ Harry (Fritz' guy)

That's it, there really are no more to keep track of.

In the beginning of the film the cases are in the hands of the "rightful" owners. Howard, Judy, Mrs Van Hoskins and Mr Smith.
Mr Smith and Mrs Van Hoskins carry their cases to their respective rooms. Howards case however is under the bed in Eunice's room and Judy, who sneaks into Howards room, lets her case sit there while she's at the music-convention.

Mrs Van Hoskins leaves her room during the evening and Harry sneaks in and steals her case. He can't get out without someone seeing him with the case, and without thinking he puts in far underneath the bed in Eunice's room and leaves.
Eunice now has both the rocks and the jewels in her room.

Mr Smith put the documents in his room and left, which of course meant that Mr Jones came in and took them. He is now sitting in another room, in possession of the documents, waiting.

Fritz visits Eunice's room, to take back the jewels. He picks up the rocks by mistake, and Eunice is left with a case full of jewels. Fritz also tells Harry to bring the rocks (which he thinks are the jewels) to the boys down the docks (the 459 Dirello Street-bit).

Eunice, disappointed with Howard, takes the jewel-case (which she thinks are the rocks) and puts it outside his room. He later brings them into his room.
Howard now has the jewels in his room, aswell as Judys clothes (as Judy is still in there with him). Harry has the rocks and Mr Jones has the documents.
With me so far?
Good.

Mr Jones suddenly finds himself in a tight spot and needs to leave the room - via the window. As he inches his way around the outside of the building Howard accidentally starts a fire in his room. The firedepartment shows up, and somewhere in the middle of this chaos Mr Smith also notices that his case (the documents) is missing.
Mr Jones falls through the window into Howards room, and while everyone and his mother is trying to put the fire out Mr Smith steals back his case. Or rather, he THINKS he's stealing back his case, he is in fact taking the case containing Judys clothes and books.
Mr Jones never seem to get his stolen case back after the chaotic night, because in the morning Howard is left with the jewels (thinking they're rocks) and Judy is left with the documents (thinking they're clothes and books).
Mr Smith has Judys clothes and Harry still has the rocks.

From here on it's pretty straightforward.
Howard and Judy goes to Mr Larrabees house (the one on 888 Russian Hill), bringing jewels and documents with them.
Mr Smith follows them in an attempt to get his documents back.
Eunice is tricked (by Judy) into going to 459 Dirello Street. There she finds Harry and the henchmen...and Howards rocks. They all climb into a car and head for Russian Hill.

At Mr Larrabees place Howard first opens his case, and finds it full of jewels. Uh-oh, wrong case!
He then opens Judys case, only to find it full of top secret documents.
"I think a slight mistake has been made somewhere"

Enter Mr Smith, carrying the case full of clothes and books! He makes Howard slide one of the cases towards him. Howard slides him the case full of documents (smart move, seeing as it is probably less valuable than the jewels, to Howard at least).

Enter Mr Jones! He wants one case, and apparently doesn't care wich one he gets. Mr Smith throws him the case full of clothes and books (again, smart move, seeing as he already knew that case did NOT contain the documents).

Enter Eunice, Harry and the henchmen, carrying the case full of rocks! They make Mr Jones throw them his case, and upon getting it they kick the useless rocks away.
At this moment Mr Jones jump from his position on the inner balcony and when he lands the fighting starts. But just prior to that, here's the "score".

¤ Mr Smith actually has his documents back!
¤ Howard and Judy (now working as a single unit) has the jewels.
¤ Harry and the henchmen has the clothes and books.
¤ Nobody has the rocks, that case is just lying on the floor.

In the middle of the fight Judy and Howard gather all the cases and leave, making everyone follow them, thus starting the gigantic chase.

When the chase is over all the cases are sitting on Judge Maxwells desk.

There ya go! :)

When Howard finds Judy on the top floor of the hotel, she's wearing a purple top and black slacks (same outfit as she wears in the final scene). Afterwards, in the lobby, she's wearing the white pantsuit she wore to the dinner. Now, while the pantsuit may have been hung apart from the suitcase in Howard's room, by the time she leaves the room her case has been switched - she wouldn't have had a change of clothes.

"Well, there it is."
