If you Love 'Whats up Doc' you will like.....

I LOVE Whats up Doc. One of my all time faves, it would be in my top 25 of all time. BUT.... here comes the part where you may be shocked... I also love this Sly Stallone movie called "Oscar" it is excellent also. Even better than
Noises Off" which is another great movie by the way.

i love them both too....:)

Have you seen His Girl Friday with Cary Grant and Roslinn Russel?
Very, very funny picture.

And forgive me for my sins, whatever they may be. Amen.

reply

It's excellent! And so is BRINGING UP BABY, 1938 again by Howard Hawks.

reply

Yes, clearly made as homage to by Bringing Up Baby....there were definitely a few notable bits inspired by His Girl Friday, as well as My Man Godfrey...or anything with Carole Lombard, really. Mainly, I saw in this movie flashes of It Happened One Night. They had to have done it on purpose, because that movie (or so it's been claimed) was a factor in creating the Bugs Bunny character (Clark Gable eats carrots and speaks quickly with his mouth full just as Bugs does).

He said it's all in your head, and I said, so's everything--
But he didnt get it.

For you Streisand fans out there, "For Pete's Sake" has its funny moments. "The Main Event," which pairs Streisand with O'neal again is not near as consistently funny as "Doc," but has its very funny moments. A movie that I always reccomend as one of the funniest movies of all time is the original 1970 "The Out of Towners." Good lord what a funny movie! The thing I love about "Doc" is the fact it is so timeless. I am only 21 and a huge fan of old movies. When my friends ask why I like old movies so much, I show them "What's Up Doc." It never fails. By the end they are rolling on the floor. : )

I have to agree with the earlier posts. "Bringing Up Baby" and "His Girl Friday" were clearly the two clearest inspirations for WUD and some of the funniest screwball comedies in history. "The Out Of Towners" (the original only, please) was another great one. Not as funny, but clearly inspired by WUD and its predecessors was "Foul Play." But if you haven't seen The Ritz, hunt it down. You'll love it too!

reply

Oh are you kidding! In my opinon Foul Play is definitely comparable, if not superior to What's up Doc. Regardless I am shocked and awed that neither are in the top 250. Those ratings are almost meaningless.

Also Clue is a hysterical comedy, maybe not quite up to WUD standards, but I think it's the same genre and very enjoyable.

reply

I always think of What's Up Doc? and Foul play as pretty much on a par. I think WUD might have the slight upper edge for me, though. But both are chockfull of absolutely hysterical lines and physical comedy.

Clue and Noises Off are also great! Murder By Death, also, is along the right lines and has some good dialogue, but it's a little spoiled by the dodgy plot and ending. But thanks for the tip about "Oscar" with Stallone. I never saw it!

Funny how we haven't mentioned a recent movie to recommend (Noises Off being the most recent I think). What happened to the good old zany/screwball type comedies?

Never judge things by their appearance. Even carpet bags. I'm sure I never do.

reply

Another great vintage comedy is 'A New Leaf', with Walter Matthau and Elaine May. Definitely on a par with WUD, though not quite as frantic.

reply

I love His Girl Friday and Bringing Up Baby AND Out of Towners (original). Never seen Oscar though, will have to catch that one.

Another one of my favourites is The Money Pit. The dialogue might not be quite as sharp, but the slap-stick is outstanding.

Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it!

reply

If you like "What's Up, Doc?", I think you'd also like "Charade" (1963) with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, "Victor/Victoria" (1982) with Julie Andrews and James Garner and even "The Blues Brothers" (1980).

They've all got a lot of similarities; the first two for the hotel corridor type scenes, and the last one for car pile ups!

Actually, more than His Girl Friday, WUD seems more an homage to Bringing Up Baby (already mentioned) and The Lady Eve. In the Trivia section it is said that Bogdanovich had O'Neal and Streisand to watch it.

reply

If you liked Money Pit then you have to see the original... Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House! With the ultimate bumbling, hubby Cary Grant & perfect wife Myrna Loy.

Also check out Cary as an adorable, bespectacled scientist in Monkey Business 1952 w/sooo hilarious wife Ginger Rogers and new starlet Marilyn Monroe! Great zany cast of character actors & quick, witty, dialogue, directed by Howard Hawks (Bringing up Baby fame)

I adored "A New Leaf".

Good choice Jason, I do appreciate Elaine May and that includes her "Istar", but as one who has been in love with the GREAT Madeline Kahn for almost more years than I can remember, let me recommend her next Bogdanovich film, "Paper Moon". I will watch and re-watch that and "Blazing Saddles" with Lili Von Stoop and "High Anxiety" just to see Madeline. I miss her greatly and her peerless comedy. None better!

Only two things are actually knowable:
It is now and you are here. All else is merely a belief.

A couple of similar comedies I like:

Manhattan Murder Mystery

A Fish Called Wanda

A fish called Wanda was overrated , it wasn't terrible but it wasn't really all that amusing...imo.

reply

I never cared for "A Fish Called Wanda" either.

One fairly recent title I'd recommend: "Flirting With Disaster."

I agree that both The Money Pit and Foul Play are good.

2 others I would recommend are:

It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057193/combined [Great cast of both big names and character actors]

Sex and The Single Girl http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058580/combined [Natalie Wood, Henry Fonda, Lauren Bacall, Tony Curtis, and others]. It's a funny movie with a great car scene at the end.
