Isn't It Time for a Remake?? - Here's a 2006 Cast ...

Barbra Streisand .... Judy Maxwell - Kathy Griffin
Ryan O'Neal .... Dr. Howard Bannister - Jim Carrey or Nicolas Cage
Madeline Kahn .... Eunice Burns - Lisa Kudrow
Kenneth Mars .... Hugh Simon - John Michael Higgins
Austin Pendleton .... Frederick Larrabee - Nathan Lane
Michael Murphy .... Mr. Smith - Will Ferrell
Philip Roth .... Mr. Jones (as Phil Roth) - Brad Garrett
Sorrell Booke .... Harry - Jason Alexander
Stefan Gierasch .... Fritz - Eugene Levy
Mabel Albertson .... Mrs. Van Hoskins - Catherine O'Hara
Liam Dunn .... Judge Maxwell - J.K. Simmons
John Hillerman .... Mr. Kaltenborn - Patrick Stewart
George Morfogen .... Rudy, the Headwaiter - Angela Kinsey
Graham Jarvis .... Bailiff - Colin Mochrie
Randy Quaid .... Professor Hosquith - Rainn Wilson

The remake wouldn't have to follow the 1972 plot exactly. Indeed, the 1972 production was a remake of "Bringing Up Baby" from 1938. It was 34 years from "Brining Up Baby" to "What's Up Doc?" and it will be exactly 34 years from "What's Up Doc?" to 2006. It is time.

I have to agree with Rob. This is one of those movies in which the cast just clicked perfectly to make a classic. To remake this one, or attempt too, would be a sin.

It's a thought experiment people, relax. Thinking about a remake cast is fun, not the end of the world.

My remake cast:

Howard: Paul Giamatti
Judy Maxwell: Kate Winslett
Eunice: Reese Witherspoon
Hugh Simon: Philip Seymour Hoffman
Mr. Larrabee: Steve Carrell
Mrs. Van Hoskins: Phylicia Rashad

And for the homage...

Judge Maxwell: Barbra Streisand
Bailiff: Ryan O'Neal

No remake.

NO, NO, NO, NO.

Everytime some massive ego in Hollywood decides to remake a classic, they screw it up. Don't let them to this. It is time for the idiots that run the studios to try think originally again, and do new movies, not just crap "remakes" of old ones.

Remake in the sense of keeping story and words, no! That would not make any sense as this is one of the best comedies of all times so what could be done better.

BUT: It is high time another comedy like this is made. The last hysterically funny movie was Wanda although the twist was different. But as DOC was no BABY the next good thing would be no DOC or WANDA. But it is time for it.

The cast:
Anniston i do not like but i can imagine she could be great in something like that with the right director. Clooney i think could be a good replacement for O'Neal. And sure there is someone to replace Kahn: Nicole Kidman. She is as ugly and uncontrolled as Eunice was. Mr. Mars could be replaced by her ex.

That would be a great cast for a realy wacky comedy.

The Question is who would be able the direct something like that these days?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!

In my humble opinion, this film is wayyyyy too intelligent for current society, so a remake would be an absolute disaster as they would try to "dumb it down" and use their same ol'-same ol' romantic comedy formula on it. Blech!! People today need their jokes sloowww and spelled out. You have to REALLY listen to the original WUD and THINK to get some of the jokes - which I LOVE about that movie.

And it is BLASPHEMY to ever remake ANY CHARACTER Madeline Kahn ever played. I swear when that woman died, it was like I lost my own mother. She was an absolute HOOT - she could NEVER be replaced.

Lilly Von Schtup - I miss you!

For GOD's sake....not Griffin.

Judy Maxwell.......Sarah Jessica Parker
Eunice Burns.......Sandra Bullock
Hugh Simon.........Sacha Baron Cohen
Mr. Larrabee.......Steve Carrell

A remake? How about something new that's ORIGINAL. You're completely mistaken saying What's Up Doc is a remake of Bringing Up Baby. That's like saying Jaws is a remake of Moby Dick. One film inspired the other.

Nobody ever said that "What's Up, Doc?" was a REMAKE of "Bringing Up Baby." It was mentioned that "What's Up, Doc?" had the flavor of "Bringing Up Baby." Peter B. said himself that he had "Bringing Up Baby" in mind when he made "What's Up, Doc?"

Remake - ha ha - no way, but if you have to vote, how about

Howard: Marky mark or kevin bacon
Judy Maxwell: Dakota fanning
Eunice: Madonna
Hugh Simon: Freddy Prinze Jr
Mr. Larrabee: Kevin Federline
Mrs. Van Hoskins: Eddie murphy
Judge Maxwell: Christopher walken
The two guys carring the glass: Al franken and rick moranis

San francisco could even also be played by another city - let's vote on that one.

Ok, we're all pretty much agreed that a remake should NEVER, ever be made of this film, because it's perfection the way it is. But let's say someone did. The one thing I always like about remakes is when they manage to have people from the original cast playing another role in the film, be it supporting or cameo. One of my favourites is the nasty fiancee from the original "Parent Trap" playing the nasty fiancee's mother in the remake, and there are others, like Faye Dunaway being the famele lead and then the psychologist (I think?) in both versions of "The Thomas Crown Affair".

So if they did a WUD remake, who could we recast?

My first thought would be Madeline Kahn as Mrs Van Hoskins (impossible, sadly, but this is just a fantasy anyway, so she could still be alive in a fantasy!).

Austin Pendleton (Mr Larrabee) could play Judge Maxwell.

Ryan O'Neal is a toughie...I can't see him as any of the supporting cast, like Fritz or the Hotel Manager. I'd put him in a one-line cameo, like Rudy the headwaiter, or one of the scientists. I don't suppose he could carry off the role of Hugh Simon, though he's a bit old now anyway.

I just noticed how there are practically no female roles aside from Judy, Eunice and Mrs Van Hoskins, so if Barbra were to be in it, she could only do a cameo, like the lady on the plane who looks startled at Howard and Judy kissing.

Any suggestions?
