AWFUL!!!

THE LAST PICTURE SHOW gets totally blasted by imdb people (here and again) but this movie, which is downright awful, gets all praises, zero negative comments.

i guess it's one of those movies that people dont care enough about it to comment on it if they hated it.

peter bogdonavitch went from making one of the best movies, LAST PICTURE SHOW, and his ego got the best of him and he then made this horrendous movie.

it was a hit, i realize... which means nothing.

HORRIBLE MOVIE!

I wouldn't go as far as to say this was horrible, but I'm not crazy about WUD either. Bogdanovich seems to be trying too hard with most of the gags and dialogue to recreate what Hawks and Sturges did. The chase scene is a riot, however, and the courtroom scene is also a blast. Madeline Kahn steals the movie. She's always a treat to watch on-screen. Kenneth Mars was hilarious as well.

What's Up Doc is OK, but I can't say I find it nearly as funny or endearing as some of the screwball classics of the 30s and 40s like Bringing Up Baby or The Lady Eve.

"They'll print it."
"How do you know?"

While I wouldn't say awful I not as excited as I used to be by the film. I loved it when I was 12, and saw it at the theatre. (In point of fact, my brother and I sat through it 3 times.)

However seeing it now is a bit tedious. Those case switching scenes up and down the hotel hall, are boring, and the scene of the hotel room being destroyed is too far fetched, to be belivable.

Hate to say it, but I recently tried to watch it again, and popped the DVD out after 15 minutes. I had better things to do.

You call this movie horrible and yet you have no real support for your ignorant opinion. Next time you feel like making a post that says a movie is terrible, why don't you say what is "horrible" about it.

it wasn't that bad,but i bit overrated.

I think What's Up Doc is one of the best comedy films of all-time, but to each his own.

By the way, The Last Picture Show was an excellent film too. The critics loved it, so I don't understand the OP's frustration.

The original poster (the eaten bath) actually posted this comment 3 yrs. ago. Funny that people are still responding to it.

I did notice however that he never got around to explaining his opinion. It's one thing to say that a film is just awful. But if he never explained specifically what was so awful about it, then his point is irrelevant.

Streisand herself was quoted as saying that during the making of this film that she didn't think it was funny. Perhaps, like Barbra, you just didn't understand the references.

WUP is a tribute to all the slapstick comedies of the 30's and 40's and the Warner Bros cartoons of the time (particularly the Bugs Bunny features. Hence, the title and Bab's very "Bugs-like" performance). The off-the-cuff humor, broadly drawn characters, and over-the-top sight gags are homages to this style of comedy.

This isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it is the best of it's genre.

well, you're not alone.one of the movies'STARS said almost the same thing.i would bet Barbara Streisand wishes she could take that back.

I'll step up to the plate and say that this film was pretty bad. Naturally, I can't disagree that some people will laugh at it and enjoy it, but at the same time, those people (most of you) need to realize that movie taste is all subjective. You can't simply say that this movie is great and expect everyone to share that opinion, just like me saying it's bad doesn't call for you to change your opinion.

I really didn't laugh at any point. Probably the most memorable scene was the chaotic fire in the hotel, but that got cut short when it faded out to the morning after. I didn't find the movie witty in the least bit. Barbara Streisand was annoying as hell. The most redeemable aspect of the film is that Madeline Kahn is amazing.

Alright. Now, of course, people want to make comparisons through my idea of good comedy. Some great comedies (and I've excluded some dark comedy films like Ghost World [2001], and strict romantic comedies like Roman Holiday [1953]):

Clue (1985), Groundhog Day (1993), Grumpy Old Men (1993), His Girl Friday (1940), Some Like It Hot (1959), The Odd Couple (1968), Unfaithfully Yours (1948), Wedding Crashers (2005), After Hours (1985), Arthur (1981), Fletch (1985), It Happened One Night (1934), Multiplicity (1996), Nothing to Lose (1997), One, Two, Three (1961), My Cousin Vinny (1992), Superbad (2007), The 'burbs (1989), The Bank Dick (1940), The Importance of Being Earnest (2002), The War of the Roses (1989), Waking Ned (1998), Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Any of those were exceptionally better than What's Up, Doc? was, and those are just the tip of the iceberg, and excluding a lot of others ;-)

I liked the movie but couldnt help finding Barbara's character annoying, I didnt understand why she started stalking O'neals character, maybe she found him attractive?

reply

I came on here to find out why Barbra started pestering him. I guess she thought he was cute or something.
