Looks as if it were shot in 65mm

I thought it most probably was while watching, but IMDb says it was shot in 35mm, although it was printed on both 35 and 70mm (and 16mm). Reminded me of watching 2001 and being extremely impressed with its visuals, as both were shot around the same time, but 2001 was genuinely shot in 65mm which explains why it looks so good. I thought maybe the Solaris Blu-Ray transfer was from a 70mm print but it was indeed from a 35mm one, so I find the film's visual quality extremely impressive even before we talk about the cinematography. Great stuff.

I never heard of Soviet movies shot in 60 mm and if they did I doubt they would shell out for Tarkovsky who was a black sheep in the Goskino family.

However he was known to be extremely obsessive abt details and drove subordinates nuts until the shot looked exactly how he wanted. His cameraman never worked with him again after Solaris - he had enough. But evidently it paid off!
