Solaris is better that odyssey 2001

It has better character development. In odyssey 2001 the only interesting character is the robot( bat the robot is perfect as a character). It has better story and is more emotional. Both of them have perfect visual bat i find Solaris to be better than odyssey 2001.Finally Solaris and odyssey 2001 are way mach better movies than The Shawshank Redemption. In fact cage 211 is better he Shawshank Redemption and is not on the same league of movies like Solaris or odyssey 2001 that are both all time classic.

Comparing the two films is meaningless.

The characters in 2001 were supposed to be unemotional and robotic - that was the point (and the computer was more emotional - that was also the point).

One does not have a "better story" than the other - they are different stories.

I think 2001 and Solaris are very different from Shawshank - again, a comparison as to the quality of the three films has little to no meaning. 2001 and Solaris are more original and daring then Shawshank (and more exciting for me to see, due to their originality, vision and creativity), but Shawshank was well done for the type of movie it was.

You have GOT to be kidding. This turd is not even in the same class with 2001.

2001 is the greatest film of all time IMHO. This film was long, dull, boring, incomprehensible and pretentious, a big crapfest!

Btw, did I mention that it's really DULL?

I prefer 2001 to Solaris, but I really don't think it's fair to compare the two. To me 2001 is about technology and evolution while Solaris is about human nature.

Agreed! Just to illustrate, one point (among many others):

The seething, surging, churning ocean in "Solaris" is a far better metaphor for SUPERIOR ALIEN INTELLIGENCE than that ridiculous black granite slab in "2001: A Space Odyssey."

Don't forget "13 Apollo", "Planet Forbidden", "Quest Galaxy", "Third Kind Encounters" and "One Capricorn".

I agree.

While 2001 brilliantly achieves the 'rhapsody' effect Kubrick strove for, Solaris delivers a much more engaging all around experience. It takes some serious talent to pull off Solaris. Abstract, challenging, artistic, beautiful, technically ingenious all without the bombast.

I think 2001 is perfection, an almost purely visual tone-poem that rewards countless re-watching. Solaris is also a superb film, no question about that, but it's going for the emotional tone that 2001 quite consciously eschews. Nothing wrong with that, as it poses some provocative questions about the human condition. But 2001 goes for something far most vast & transcendental—and succeeds with seeming effortlessness.

Or so it seems to me.
