character confusion

If Peppermint Patty is the tomboy in the green shirt and flip flops, then what's the name of the girl at Snoopy's going away party in the orange dress and matching hair bow? I thought SHE was Peppermint Patty in A Charlie Brown Christmas?

Her name is just Patty (the girl with the orange dress and orange hairbow). Patty was part of the original cast of characters when Schulz first came up with the series, but after awhile, she became a background character, as Schulz found his main characters.

Yep, as someone else just replied, the girl in orange is Patty, not Peppermint Patty. No relation. Patty was one of the original four kids who were there at Peanuts's start in 1950---along with Charlie Brown, Shermy, and Violet. Patty and Violet were a pair and at first Lucy was kind of a tagalong to them, but as she became more prominent she gradually edged them out. Still, you can see a lot of them in the earlier Peanuts specials, since they were still in the strip in the late 1960s.

The two were pretty much phased out after the 70s but continued to make very occasional cameos through the 90s.

Peppermint Patty came into the strip pretty much right after "A Charlie Brown Christmas", just in time to make her screen debut in "You're in Love, Charlie Brown" in 1967.
