What was with the fat chick?

To me, the whole character of the wife was the comedy relief for the movie. Her whole continuing promises to lose weight and never does, the dog peeing on her, the way her death was completely telegraphed (and pretty silly). But what was the literary point of her character; was it only for humor?

I asked the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

if you haven't read the book...

for me she is another example of how different and weird billy pilgrim's life is. a lifeless goat that enters her own life into billy's. sure she had character which vonnegut had to give her but it all adds up to the chaos being brought into billy's life. she doesn't lose weight because billy says he likes her just the way she is. the humor of it all does exist for vonnegut looks for humor in almost every scenario. so yes part of her character is for humor. but, don't look at it that way. look at it through the eyes of billy. the humor is directed towards him for he is the one who married her and had to deal with everything about her. she is the nuts in his cake. i hope that makes sense.

All I know is that Valencia was annoying as hell. Especially her voice.

Both she and Billy led charmed lives. No matter how dumb and passive they were, they still had nice lives.

How else do you explain such a numbnut having her death go down as "somebody rammed the back of her car"? I can't believe no one had to pay for all the chaos and damage she caused while running wild. I guess this was before everyone sued everyone else for anything.
