Remake
I've heard that Gieullemo Del Toro is doing a remake of Slaughterhouse Five.
sharei read about this also, maybe i am a jerk but it pisses me off that they are remaking this.
there are certain amazing films that came out in the late 60's and early 70's that all have a certain feel.
i.e. Catch 22, Easy Rider, Point Blank, The Getaway...etc, maybe it is the jump cuts in the editing that gives these films there own personality but in a remake, with new producers trying to make money, the absurdity of Slaughter House Five maybe lost.
and can we get the sexy yet non trashiness of valerie perrine again?
Some directors have made films that didn't need remaking, and they were the worst films they ever made. (The Cohen Brothers' version of The Ladykillers for example.)
Don't remake old films. Restore and rerelease them.
Two differences between the book and the original film version are the book Billy Pilgrim sees the Tralfamadorians (they look like sink plungers with a hand and an eye on top) whereas in the film they're invisible, and the book features science fiction writer Kilgore Trout (who appears in several other Kurt Vonnegut novels) who is absent from the film.
In Del Torro did remake Slaughterhouse Five he would certainly show the Tralfamadorians.
The movie would be pretty bizzare if they did it just like the book. I thought it was certainly a change of pace for director George Roy Hill. He made this movie in between Butch Cassidy and The Sting and it feature then-unknown and mostly still-unknown actors, a big budget, and almost zero box office.
shareWhile I am in no way a fan of Hollywood remakes, Guillermo del Toro is one of the few directors I'd actually except to do this. He supposedly wants to do a straight from the book adaptation, and anyone that has seen Pan's Labrinth knows that Guillermo can handle a story such as this. I'm interested to see what he'd do, and would hope that it wouldn't be a piece of Hollywood remake trash.
The original film is weird for it's time which is why I like it, and other films similar to it from that era.

I am all for a re-make of someone doing an animated or Tim Burton "Nightmare" style version. That might be dumb...but the movie was great but I still have a vision of how the book is that the movie didnt scratch completely...Tramalfadoreans, Kilgore, the zoo like aspect and also to have new technology and a faithful adaptation would be needed. without it or with a stupid director then no but i would see it. best book ever!
shareI agree. This is the 50th Anniversary of Lawrence of Arabia, which really needs to be seen on the big screen. Where's it showing? Next year will be the 50th Anniversary of My Fair Lady. Will that be shown in the theatre? We need to honor our film heritage. Are you listening, Martin Scorcese?
shareI never quite understand why people get so offended they decide to refresh an older movie. Maybe the remake will be awful or maybe it will be just ok. But what if the remake is great...maybe better than the original? Who can say.
Everyone acts as if movie remakes are something that only started recently. They've been going on pretty much since movies were being made. Hell, Hitchcock remade several of his own movies.
And to those that say there has never been a good remake, please watch the following films:
-An Affair to Remember
-Cape Fear
-Ben-Hur
-The Man Who Knew Too Much
-The Maltese Falcon
-3:10 to Yuma
-The Thomas Crown Affair
Think...if people had decided there was no need to remake movies that were already considered pretty good films in their own right, we would never have Cary Grant at his best in Affair, we'd never have the chariot race in Ben-Hur, and we would all have missed out on the great DeNiro performance in Cape Fear.
Maybe the remake will be good...maybe bad...at least give it a chance.
First of all. You can't call it a remake. Someone would be making a movie of the novel - not a remake of the first film. Think of it as Minghella tackling the novel The Talented Mr. Ripley even though there was Purple Noon. Minghella went to the novel and created an epic version closer to the book.
There is so much that could be added to this story that could make truly epic and powerful. Today we have the technology to make the Tralfamodorians and not have it cheesy. I hated that Kilgore Trout wasn't in the film. Much of what has affected Billy's mind has been influenced by the writings of Kilgore. I would love to see the narrator in the story. It adds another layer that makes your mind spin. A good chunk of the novel deals with the narrator trying find a way to write his "Dresden" novel.
Personally, I would love to see Steven Spielberg do this. WWII, prison camp, aliens, and time travel. It is right up his alley.
Believe me, this film can be done again and it could blow away the first production.
Using the previous list,
-An Affair to Remember
-Cape Fear
-Ben-Hur
-The Man Who Knew Too Much
-The Maltese Falcon
-3:10 to Yuma
-The Thomas Crown Affair
Charlie Kaufman as well, which has my interest now.

Now how is Guillermo going to play a 22 year old? Isn't he like 50 now?
I think the producers should have Michael Sacks take a break from the stock trading business and have him make a cameo, maybe as Wild Bill
play? I thought he was going to direct? maybe he'll make a cameo like he has in some of his other movies.

The first movie version of Slaughterhouse-Five is my second favorite movie. But I would like to see a remake.
If the remake is good, that is wonderful (but I don't think it will replace the first one for me).
If it's bad, then I'll still have the first one to enjoy.
I've survived bad remakes of many of my favorite movies: The Lathe of Heaven, The Andromeda Strain, On the Beach.
The only problem with Slaughterhouse-Five being remade is its topic. The anti-war message was tied to World War II, and when the first version came out that was only thirty years in the past. To keep the same time-frame, the new version would have to be a period piece, losing some of its relevancy. To update it would require many changes. The first Gulf War? Desert instead of snow?
