Why Did Shelly Winters want to gain so much weight. There really was no reason for it. Yes her swimming death but that could have been age that killed her. Are they insinuating because she is fat she died. Seems silly.
I didn't like "Raging Bull", either, Rascal. Aside from what you said, it's very boring. _________________
Yeah, I forgot boring, something that Poseidon Adventure isn't, even for a moment. Being the glutton I am, I even bought a copy for my blu ray collection—second hand though—in the hope that when I do watch it again, I might just find something that I failed to miss the first time and see the "genius" or "brilliance" that many RB fans think exists somewhere. All I see when I watch it, is one unpleasant, unappealing and uninteresting story and characters. Perhaps because it is in b&w, it must make it arty. Rocky, it's not!

I don't mind Taxi Driver and I like the NY 70's flavor to it. I wouldn't rate it as a great film, but I do think it is a challenging and interesting film. Now De Niro is very appealing in this.
Mr. H, I haven't seen Mean Streets. I believe you endorse this one?

I love "Mean Streets", Rascal. It is my 2nd favorite Scorsese film; only "Alice..." has the edge on it, mostly because of Burstyn's performance and the sharp, terrific dialogue and the film's many LOL moments.
"Mean Streets" has incredible energy. It's a very seductive film, totally captures time and place and mood. And DeNiro I think was never better.
I would agree with you about "Taxi Driver". I like the movie, I think it's a provocative movie, and DeNiro is, indeed, sympathetic and appealing. I don't really find it to be an all out masterpiece, though. It is kind of a downer, obviously.
The scene where Travis takes Betsy out to the porno flick seemed very real to me, and I was kind of heartbroken for him. I'm always attracted to the ones who would seem to have good intetions, but are too messed up for it to make much of a difference.

I have a copy of Mean Streets on vhs Mr. H. Must make an effort to view.
Yeah, Taxi Driver can be a bit repellant and downbeat; but I suppose that was it's point and De Niro does give a very compelling performance. I find though with TD, that I am observing it, rather than getting caught up in it and it can leave me feeling detached and cold. It doesn't have the warmth or generosity of something like 'Midnight Cowboy', if I was to make a comparison in regards to the social milieu and themes of struggling and feeling alienated with life and purpose.

Being fat was the characters burden, as well as everyone elses. Linda clearly had a problem with having to follow an over weight individual, especially in the novel.
