Why did Linda have to die?

Her death was pointless. They were almost saved and she dies; annoys me every time I watch it. I understand why the others died, but her death was meaningless. I don't understand why Rogo wasn't holding her. I always pretend she never died and was saved with the others.

Her death was way too quick and not suspenseful. It should've been more dramatic with Rogo trying to hold on to her, but letting her slip through his hands anyway. Otherswise, it's completely pointless, just as you said.

Not all movie deaths are supposed to be heroic and have a purpose like Mrs Rosen and Reverend Scott's.

It didn't have to be heroic, just not quick and boring and so similar to Roddy's death. Its purpose is to at least be suspenseful or scary, I'd say.

Her death further emphasizes for the viewer how much he loved her. I believe that in the novel, the character is not well liked by anyone and the author intended for readers to feel the same way. I think the film's writers thought the viewers would not like her either, but the opposite happened. So having her die also affects those viewers.
I feel the same way about Captain Harrison dying. I so wanted him to have been thrown clear of the ship and to have been found either by the survivors or shown to have been picked up by the rescuers.
