I Spit on Your Grave was worse.
Now that had more impact and shocks then this movie including a more outrageous rape scene.

ISOYG was more disturbing and maybe a little more violent, but I think Last House is a better movie overall. More entertaining, in my opinion.
"What an excellent day for an exorcism."

I hated ISOYG. some of its rape scenes were effective, but the whole movie just felt mechanical and boring. The characters weren't the least bit memorable.
shareI think Last House is a much better film, yes Day of the Woman is more graphic in its depiction of the abuse the main character endures, and the violence is more brutal, but[/] in Day of the Woman Jennifer manages to survive her attackers and is able to seek out revenge.
So while it may have been more graphic, I have to say that in my opinion Last House the better of the two, and made a far bigger impact on me due to the tragic fate of Mari and Phylis.

I never took the effort to see I Spit on Your Grave, especially after Ebert's review of it, in particular the observation he made that he felt dirty for even having been witness to it. He described the "plot" as it were, and it sounds horrific. No thanks.
As for The Last House on the Left, I have steadfastly held to this one as my example of the 'worst movie ever made'. It hasn't been easy. Filmmakers have constantly assaulted the public with movie atrocities which challenge this film's status. Hobgoblins is arguably more inept, and Manos continues to amaze people in that it was a real film. I went to see one in the mid-80s called Dolls, which left scars that have never healed, but through it all, TLHOTL triumphs.
It's bottom-of-the-barrel in most respects, very "seventies exploitation", but it's more than that. It's voyeuristic sadism. The category I've heard this film placed in is urban horror. This basically means there are no actual horror film motifs like monsters or vengeful spirits. The Incident, with Martin Sheen, is an example of this genre, minus the barbarity. The scene in the woods epitomizes the film nicely. I didn't feel horror, just sadness; for the actresses even moreso than their characters.
Leonard Maltin calls TLHOTL "inept and very sick". Maybe Wes Craven was exorcising some demons when he made this film, since I know he can do better. The Serpent and the Rainbow is a good example here. He took the plot of Virgin Spring, but forgot to include the themes that provide substance and differentiate it from a simple exercise in nihilism.
>> Leonard Maltin calls TLHOTL "inept and very sick".
I've heard this quoted before, but have been unable to find when Maltin said this. Do you know where he said it?
It might be one of those Chinese-wispers quotes. Robert Ebert is often quoted as having called "I Spit on Your Grave" the worst film ever, but he never said that.
I was definitely more disturbed by LHOTL, even though ISPOG was disturbing as well. I guess at the end of ISPOG, the audience is able to feel almost proud of the woman (her character's name escapes me) because she survives and gets her revenge on her attackers. However, in LHOTL, the parents can get their revenge, but they can never get their daughter back. It just makes it more disturbing and well, almost sad feeling, really. Plus, the way the 2 girls are endlessly brutalized so senselessly seriously screws with your mind.
So come up to the lab and see what's on the slab
For what it's worth, I saw the remakes of "I Spit On Your Grave" and "The Last House On The Left" first. Then the originals.
In the case of "I Spit On Your Grave", I found the original MUCH better than the remake. And with "The Last House On The Left", I thought the remake was a bit better than the original, but MUCH better than the garbage known as the remake of "I Spit On Your Grave".
Now to answer your question directly, which original did I like better, "The Last House On The Left 1972" or "I Spit On Your Grave 1978"?
I meekly put up my hand and say "I Spit On Your Grave 1978", Ebert be damned. ;-)
Last House On the Left kills......I spit on your grave.
shareYeah I agree, ISOYG is way worse. Beautiful and delicate Jennifer is brutalized by a bunch of disgusting *beep* whom the viewer cannot (or at least I couldn't) find sympathetic in any way and can't help but loathe deeply along with the whole ordeal. Whereas I kinda liked the crazy gang in LHOTL, at times their silly degeneration becomes hilarious (and I must confess a mild crush on Krug Stillo and his soothing psycho voice...), it nearly makes you forget about the terrible things they do.

I rented ISOYG when i was in junior high in the mid 90s and OMG it made me gag even with that hard to watch 20 minute gang rape to that horrific castration.
"You killed Captain Clown, YOU KILLED CAPTAIN CLOWN"-The Joker on Batman TAS
Well yeah, considering the rape "scene" is like 45 minutes long in the original "I Spit On Your Grave." however i think the revenge part was more powerful in Last House, and that was more violent. I mean, they STABBED the girl multiple times, and then raped her, and then shot her to death. In i Spit On your Grave, they roughed her up, but they left her alive at least.
