About Roger Ebert's review

I loved this movie, I liked Roger Ebert's review of it, but having watched it several times now, I still am left wondering something.
Ebert said that 'There is a moment of such sheer and unexpected terror that it beats anything in the heart-in-the-mouth line since Alan Arkin jumped out of the darkness at Audrey Hepburn in "Wait Until Dark."'
I can't quite figure out which moment he's referring to. My guess is when Phyllis is steps from the road, and the bad guys reappear. Does anybody know??

What burgerswat posted would've been my guess - really one of the only jump-shots except that of Mari and Junior looking over their shoulders and running straight into Krug and Co. (In the DVD I have there are several outtakes of that scene, as they kept falling and laughing.)

He was referring to the shot when Krug pops out with his machete just as Phyllis finds the main road.
