how the bloody bleep.....

did this get a lower rating than the remake?!?!?! this film is a classic with a lot of deep social commentary, and not to mention extremely gritty. While the remake is silly in comparison and has absolutely nothing to offer.

A lot of people seem to dislike this movie because of the cheerful music and the less than intelligent police, neither of which I minded. It didn't take away from the quality of the movie for me.

Come, fly the teeth of the wind. Share my wings.

well people are right about the police. they were almost unnecessary within the film and worked as comic relief as best. actually the inappropriately cheerful music worked itself very well into the film. I feel like it added a darker tone to the film in an almost humorous way

How come more people don't get that the "cheerful" music and the comic elements make this film so much more sick and depraved?? I mean infusing silly comedy into a movie about rape and torture is crazy and disturbing and offensive. This style has been done before with films like "Cannibal Holocaust" (pretty, romantic music) and "House on the edge of the Park" with it's silly disco music and pretty "love theme." Think of it like this; which would be more disturbing..a guy telling you about a rape/murder in a serious tone...or a guy telling you about a rape/murder while making jokes about it and laughing? the weak remake completely overlooked that element, which is why it will never be considered a "classic" like the original. The ratings here don't mean a lot, because a good portion of the voters really know nothing about cinema.. so they should never be taken seriously.

One of the best posts I've ever read on a horror board. 100% correct.

They don't seem to use much 'dramatic irony' in films like last house and cannibal holocaust anymore in regards to soundtracks. CH is disturbing, because the soundtrack is actually quite pretty, folksy and 'peaceful'.

With last house, the scene that springs to mind is David Hess's score when they have just kidnapped the girls and have them and the boot as they drive long, the song is like something from Benny Hill, that always 'irked' me.

>a lot of deep social commentary,

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Right. This movie is just so deep. They should offer Masters Degree courses in it, this thing is just so ripe with social commentary.

I'm guessing you are the kind of person who can find deep social commentary in his toilet bowl after a hard night of drinking. Which, if you filmed for 90 minutes, would be about the same as this "movie."

reply

if you pay close attention to the subtleties as well as putting yourself in the shoes of the victim's parents, or hell, every other character, then you'll find social commentary here. granted there are over the top gore and violence films that are meant to be just that, but this one you gotta pay close attention to. however you're entitled to your opinion and nobody is trying to change your mind

reply

I remember when David Hess (RIP Krug) was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments and they were talking about the movie, he said everybody at that time wanted to do an anti-war/anti-violence, something along those lines, kind of movie, and asking how do you do that given the subject matter? And it's a good question.

spoilers...

what the film now represents in popular culture goes beyond the directors intention.
The left (in the title) could represent womens liberation and the march on International Women's Day.Or Just left wing politics in general.
If left wing is a more anarchic viewpoint.
Then "Krug" seems to be the fascist antidote, sold to the viewer through the exploitation of women.
There's a similarity to the 'texas chainsaw massacre.' in the mix of capitalism and misogamy.
If you see "pornography." as an art, even as an exploitative one,
the laws on child and animal pornography in the west was more lenient than today, in a similar way that 'human centipede.' tries to offer the view a simulated 'scat' porn. this film tries with 'child/rape/ porn.
all the dressing i.e the cops, characters music and even the tag line are diversion tactics to sell this film as pseudo porn.
if pornography if an art form, then this film is not "only a movie" but a work of art too.
If it is a work of art then the intentions become clear. present what the people want, but do it in a way that belittles and patronizes them.

The title "Last House on the Left" is actually a reference and nod to a line in A Clockwork Orange.

the reason is just simply more people gave the remake a better rating. This movie was awful.

reply

The original certainly gave the investors a better return on their money, so there's that.
