Crackers?

For the first time (and I've watched this show so many times over the years) I noticed something...

In the scene where the girls are choosing a present for their teacher in the general store, aren't there several boxes of Christmas crackers on the counter? And I'm curious---would Christmas crackers even be known in Nebraska in the 1940s? Or is this something that is more typical of Canada, where the show was shot in the early 1970s?

I always thought they were there because the show was filmed in Canada and the Canadian crew didn't realize Christmas crackers weren't common in the US.

Although I have a friend who has lived in the US for all his life, and so has his wife, and they always have crackers at Christmastime.

Christmas crackers were first manufactured in 1846. That was in England I know but I think that most of the US population would have had crackers by 1946.
