what was the attraction?

this is an awesome movie....anything with McQueen AND Peckinpah is sure-fire perfection....but i have one question....what is the attraction of Rudy to Fran? she drops Harold (her husband) like a dirty shirt to hook with this slob of a criminal...i know women like the outlaw type....i can see Carol going nuts for Doc whenever they met....but wtf??? hated it when Harold hung himself but i'd have lost it too

"Oh Renfield you disappoint me so"-Dracula

Well, if you recall, Fran is pretty much forced into her relationship with Rudy; however, it should be more than clear that Fran is pretty bored with her marriage to a much older man (Jack Dodson) and Rudy coming into their lives was probably the most exciting thing that had happened to Fran in years.

this is something that really confused and sort of disgusted me in this movie. she just seemed like a whore to me. there was very little forcing.

i was hoping that her husband would some how get a hold of the revolver and blow both of them away, but no such luck

I felt the same way. I couldn't bear to watch those scenes. I was happy and relieved to see Rudy get killed in the end. He got what was coming to him, too bad Fran didn't get the same.

I saw this film when I was still pretty young and naive and those scenes, especially when Harold hangs himself, really damaged my trust and confidence with women.

So why did Peckinpah set it up that way? What was he saying when he showed a stronger, violent man take a woman away from a weaker man and showed her enjoying it? Was there a point to this?

You look like the kind of girl who won't press charges

It was known that Harold married the wrong woman. It states in the script that nobody talked to the Clintons anymore because Harold decided to marry a women like Fran. Also a woman doesn't become a total whore like that over night, Harold must have missing some major clues along the way about Fran and sadly for him, Rudy help him realize it.

reply

Yes, that is the way it is. I saw it again yesterday for the first time since the '70s and actually those scenes didn't bother me anymore. They were even funny. Now if Harold was able to get up and hang himself, why didn't he just leave the room and call the cops? It seemed to me he had lots of chances to escape. Rudy was already injured for Chrissakes!

Nice dress. It would look great on my floor.

Maybe Harold was just fed up with it all. First he lives all those years in Mayberry, then has a kid named Ralph Malph, then his wife runs off with Virgil Sollozzo. People have ended it all for a lot less!

DO AND YOU SHALL BE. BE AND YOU SHALL DO. DOO BEE DOO BEE DOO.

I didn't know he was in all those shows. His wife was total trash. He should have been happy to be rid of her. It was hilarious when Doc finally belted her.

dhmason6155--
are you saying that you don't remember that Jack 'poor Harold' Dodson was on The Andy Griffith Show?. Just a question.
When this movie debuted Sally Struthers was virtually unknown--AITF changed that fast. You can't see her in this and not think 'Gloria Bunker-Stivic'.
And mostly anyone who ever sees this movie cannot see Jack Dodson--1931-1994--and not think 'Howard Sprague' of Mayberry,. Or when Michael Corleone shoots Al Lettieri aka Virgil Sollozzo in the restaurant scene.

I know all about Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo, only here with bad hair and a mustache.

The fact that the trivia bit by me re: 'Sollozzo' enlightened you is my 'raison-d-etre' for posting, as the French say..Al Lettieri 1928-1975 taken away from us too young at age 46. He had a style of menace all his own, w/wo mustache or not.

You DO know that the the guy who steals the suitcase is played by Richard Bright also of Godfather 1 & 2, yes? He died last year, run over by a bus in NYC.

Yes, I thought that was pretty amazing. And he played a Texan with a cowboy hat, and a low-life loser. A far cry from Al Neri.

Also, Bo Hopkins played the bank robber who gets killed in the first reel in a Peckinpah movie TWICE! You could say that's where the leader of the Pharoahs ended up ten years later.
