A fairly awful movie from 1973, but with a strong female character is Badge 373 with Robert Duvall. Verna Bloom is quite good, but the movie is a muddy, ridiculous mess designed to cash in on Duvall's Godfather fame.

As I recall, Peckinpah said his personal favorite was "The Ballad Of Cable Hogue"---a very off-beat turn-of-the-century movie starring Jason Robards Jr and Stella Stevens. Truly worth seeing. Filmed in Nevada.
