Anyone else think they were somewhat stupid for jumping ino the rubbish, one minute docs all mr macho by purchasing the gun and shooting up the cops outside the tv store the next he's in the garbage.

Now ok they needed to get away from the cops i guess as they were cornered at night by multiple cars but upon realising that they were now dumped in the truck they didn't even make an attempt to clamber out, for all they knew the truck could have deposited all kinds of materials and campacted them both.

That I think was the point. Tough guy McQueen was made to hide in a dumpster right after he shoots up cop cars. What's more, he cannot even get out..
I guess it is the kind of black comedy you see time and again in Peckinpah's movies.
