Doc vs Rudy

In the last shoot-out Doc vs Rudy (on the fire escape) did Rudy really miss? Obviously yes, since you would not be able to run to the border with a .375 slug in you. But I thought I saw Doc being hit in the side (his jacket moves by the impact). Is it an alternate ending? Or is Rudy just a terrible, terrible, terrible shot (missing a clear shot less then 9 feet away)?

reply

could be he hit Doc's jacket and made it twitch, because it definitely looks like he was hit. As for Rudy's poor Marksmanship, bear in mind he has a hole in his shoulder, and he's probably feeling woozy from being knocked out.

usually bad guys have terrible aim in tense times and the good guys have impeccable aim, even shooting thier guns at waist level.

I too thought that maybe the ending was the result of a late script change after the shootout was filmed, since it did look like Rudy had hit Doc, and McQueen did appear to wince in pain a couple of times (a bit like Cheyenne in Once Upon A Time In The West) while riding in Slim Pickens' truck. I was expecting one of those early-'70s ironic endings, with the happy fade-out undercut when we learn that one of the main characters is mortally wounded/dead. It thus came as a pleasant surprise to see Doc and his wife drive off together into the sunset, rather than Ali MacGraw driving off with the money but no husband.

He has a little bandage/handkerchief stuck to his hip wound when he comes out of the truck in Mexico.

It's not hard to miss from 9 yards away. Doc gets hit but, it's not a serious wound. It appears to graze his buttocks and he bandages it with his hanky.

reply

yeah, 9 yards with a hand-gun is a little harder. especially with a gun-shot in the shoulder and acouple knocks to the head. that long-barreled .357 would have been pretty accurate though. if you could hit something, it would be with that pistol. much harder of a shot with doc's 1911. but oh well, thats hollywood i suppose. either was, what an awesome movie.

Rudy did not make a good shot, that is true (and convenient for all of us or there would be no getaway).

But he did hit Doc in the side.

Doc winces in the truck and has a little bit of blood there. Seems to be a minor wound.

I don't think they were going for a "Shane" style unspoken mortal wound there.

reply

There could be a small possibility that he had a bullet proof vest on.

If I recall correctly, Doc also checks his right side (ribs/hip) after he jumps out of the truck while walking to the driver. Minor wound or no wound at all about which he's still baffled.
