Apprently, knocking women around was a sexual turn-on for McQueen.
There was an article in TV GUIDE--I believe it was not too long after McQueen died--that said the infamous "slapping" scene with Ali got McQueen so aroused sexually that at the end of the day's shooting he couldn't wait to get back home with her and they had to stop at a motel.

shareSuzanne Pleshette (NOT Susan!) was one of the most underrated and likeable actresses of all time. She never gave a bad performance, but the big break-out parts never came. She was excellent in both Nevada Smith and Support Your Local Gunfighter, but for some reason her career fizzled into TV parts in shows like Kojak. She said in an interview towards the end of her life that one of her biggest regrets was not partaking in some horizontal action with McQueen!
