Where was 'The Getaway' filmed?

I have found several references to 'The Getaway' being filmed on location in Texas. I am trying to find out exactly where in Texas it was filmed. Does anyone know? Or does anyone know any websites that would have this type of information?

Thanks in advance!

did you see the filming locations on the left menu? they're actually more descript for this movie than for most. not sure about every single scene, but everything looks an awful lot like central texas. i know that the drive-in is STILL in huntsville, tx (at least as of 1992).

The town in which the bank robbery takes place is San Marcos, Texas...the beginning scene at the river as well.

I haven't seen this film, but part of it was filmed in New Braunfels, Texas, where I live. It's between San Antonio and Austin, along I-35.

The bank that was robbed in the movie was in San Marcos, Texas. The hotel room was actually a room in the courthouse across the street from the old bank building.

My dad's business was a couple of blocks away. We would wander up to watch some of the filming. I think part of the shooting was done at Aquarina Springs as well.

The movie was filmed in El Paso, Texas. Seriously!

I'm pretty sure it was too. My dad was on the police force in El Paso and they used him as an extra.

When Jack Beynon introduces McCoy to his companions they are on a boat. In 1985 you could do tours on boats like this in San Antonio. I think I do remember our tour guide back then told us about a popular film that was made there. But at that time I didn't even know who Steve McQueen was. But who would blame me for that as I only was 13 :-)

The entire boat scene was filmed on the San Antonio riverwalk. When I was a kid you kid rent paddleboats, but they eliminated those in the 80s. In the background of the shots I recognized bridges, stairs, the Palacio Del Rio (hotel), even the trees ... without question that is the SA riverwalk. They still do have riverboat tours (same kind of boat that is in the movie), and yes, some of them you can even dine on!

I'm not connected to the San Antonio tourism industry, but for anyone reading this I would highly recommend visiting the riverwalk and San Antonio once in your life ... in our age of endless suburban strip-malls and housing developments, the riverwalk and San Antonio Mission Trail (includes a number of missions from the 1700s, the most famous being the Alamo, which is 1 block from the riverwalk), San Antonio is one of the very few cities with some genuine culture worth seeing. Plus you can't go wrong with the hundreds (literally) of excellent Mexican food restaraunts here!

When I was a kid we watched them film the scene in the drive-in in El Paso. Right in the parking lot of that shopping center on Dyer Street. The one with the tall blue sign, that's long gone now. The Drive In was called The Oasis. Torn down not too long after the movie came out. I saw them getting the police cars ready for the special effects. And Steve mcQueen came over to the crowd where I was at and started chatting it up with the people around me. Really cool.

Part of it was filmed in "Hollywood on the Border", Fabens, Texas, USA. It's about thirty miles east of El Paso, seven miles north of Mexico, and a million miles from Paradise. It was also featured as the town of "Big Tuna" in the David Lynch film "Wild at Heart", as Iraq in "Courage Under Fire" (most of the Iraqis in the film are Chicano, but brown is brown...), and "On the Border" in 1998.

The locations shown in the IMDB page appear to be correct.....They filmed in San Marcos for several weeks, down by the ice house, which has changed significantly in the 34 years since....The bank is on the square, and was vacant at the time. They ran through the house just down Hopkins St. near the road that goes out to Devil's Backbone, and had an explosion there as well. They used lots of locals and students as extras...I was Bo Hopkins' body after he got shot and the stunt man rolled out of the car...that scene was filmed at a gas station just off the square....They then moved on to El Paso or San Antonio. It was a fun time, the cast and crew were very nice, and the town treated them well.

Lots of scenes from El Paso. I lived in El Paso for awhile and I recognized the train station and when they were driving down I-10, I saw the Cielo Vista Mall. Also at the fleabag motel you could see the sillouette of the El-Paso Convention Center being built. And when they were in the pickup with Slim Pickens he was high tailing down Santa Fe street in downtown El Paso. Peckinpah liked El Paso because it is on the Mexican border..

The bank in San Marcos that they filmed the robbery scene in just re-opened last year as a restaurant. It had sat empty with everything still intact for at least ten years when they renovated it for the restaurant last year. I haven't been there; but I heard they kept the two vaults in place.

It is very sad indeed what has happened to the Square in San Marcos. Just about every business is geared for the college students now. Even the government offices on the Square are looking for new places further out of town to move to. In five years, all that will be left is the Courthouse and I'm sure someone will want to turn it into some kind of after hours spot as well.

When I lived in El Paso, and staying with my Grandma, my Brother and I walked down to the local shopping center (Northgate)about a block away on Dyer Street. It had the tall blue lighted tower for many years. It was night and they were filming the scene where Steve and Ali were driving by the restaurant and there were the cops checking them out. I believe the cop cars were from Sierra Blanca (in the movie). I can't remember the name of the restaurant (The Oasis?) but it was torn down not much longer after the movie.

I watched them rig up some of the explosive squibs in the side of the cop cars for a shootout scene later on. Also, when I was standing by the ropes, Steve came out and chatted with the crowd. He seemed pretty cool about it all.

According to my husband who used to live there, part of the movie was filmed in San Marcos TX. The park where Doc & Carol first go after his release is part of the AquaMarina.

The scene where their apt is, where they go swimming is in San Marcos at the falls right off the old ice plant. The window theyre looking out of when theyre looking at the bank is actually in the courthouse in San Marcos. The bank they robbed, the chase right afterwards, the scene where the van is stalled right before they go to rob the bank and the scene where the car crashes into the house were all filmed in San Marcos as well. The house they crashed into was a block away from our home and I remember everyone congregating across the street to watch. I also remember the mob around Sally Struthers as she passed out photos of herself and autographed them. Their offices were upstairs in an old building just down the street from the old bank. I remember going up there with a friend of mine to drop off a key a house that they owned that some of the actors were staying in. Sam Peckinpah was there, but I didnt know that it was him at the time. I also remember getting yelled at by him when a friend and I walked down a street that seemed oddly vacant -- they had cleared it for a scene and we didnt know it! Wow this brought back alot of memories!

I've always thought that the authentic south-central and southwest Texas locations added a lot to The Getaway. (And the attention to local detail, eg., the Amtrak station announcer in San Antonio saying the train is leaving for Del Rio, Sanderson, Marfa and El Paso -- the actual sequence for the towns along the train line through West Texas. (Marfa, btw, is where Giant was filmed.), or the authentic state highway sign (Texas 20) in downtown Fabens.) For anyone who has ever spent time in those areas of Texas, there is never any doubt as to where this movie takes place.
