the sally struthers smackdown

anyone else feel like getting up and cheering when mqueen smacked her down in this movie, their only scene together?

reply

That is my favorite moment in the whole movie. I've seen it about a hundred times and it cracks me up everytime, never fail. My dad and I were watching it once, and when she got smacked, he goes "oh, Meathead wouldn't like that!"

reply

well, her character is so horrible threw out the movie and the actress was so annoying later on in those commercials. and the scene is even cinematically satisfying. ahaha

reply

NEITHER WOULD ARCHIE,BECAUSE THAT'S HIS BABY GIRL!

reply

No matter how many times I watch this movie, that moment always makes me laugh out loud.

reply

The look on McQueen's face when he belts her is classic.

reply

I know!! he sort of gives her a "Who the hell are you?" followed by a short "Shut the hell up bi**h!" and then

BAM!! LOVE IT!!

I don't approve a a man hitting a woman under any circumstances.

But I make an exception in this case.

I have waited most of my 33-year-old life to see Sally Struthers get punched in the face, and tonight, having watched The Getaway for the first time, my dream came true. Thank you, Sam Peckinpah and Steve McQueen, wherever you guys are.

reply

Hey, that moment is awesome! I've replayed it 3 times.

reply

Awesome moment for sure

reply

considering you can even sort of justify a single punch since she's a horrible person, I know I laughed out loud.
Wasn't as if he viciously beat her--it was purely functional! it got her out of the way!

What I have always liked about Carter "Doc" McCoy is that he uses proportional force. He pops Struthers to eliminate her from his wet work, but doesn't come close to killing her. Even when he assassinates the cop car, in slow motion, Peckinpah style, he does it to put fear in the police force, to intimidate them into thinking twice before crossing him again. Whether it works or not is another matter, but McCoy is ferociously disciplined, and underestimated by his adversaries throughout the film.

Or he would've killed them, except for the huge heat it'd bring down on him. Doc never shows compassion or mercy otherwise.

Thank you for voting Democratic.

I laughed out loud when he punched her in the face. Great scene. Haha!

reply

Hmmmmmmmmm.
'Doc never shows compassion or mercy otherwise'.
But he does not shoot Luigi/Sam Literi (the baddie with the big moustache whatever his name is) at the end when he is unconcsious. Doc trys covering his view of the guy's face with his hand but he just can't shoot in cold blood.
Shortly afterwards he DOES shoot the gut because the guy is shooting at him.
So the proportional force theory seems true.

reply

I thought he puts his hand up over Al Lettieri's face when he is about to shoot him because a .45 slug at point blank range is going to spray a lot of blood and tissue back at McQueen, not a pleasant experience for his eyes, to say the least.

I talked about proportional force, but even though I liked the character of Doc McCoy, I'm glad I've never had to have any dealings with someone like him.

Ordinarily I hate seeing a man slap a woman. However this one I didn't mind so much because Struthers was the worst and most annoying character in the movie. I would have loved this movie so much better if it hadn't been for Sally Struthers. No offense intended for those who might have liked her character of course.

reply

who could like her character? she was terrible. wow i'm happy after all this time since i started this thread to see so many other people agree with me about that awesome scene.
