It is a pretty stunning opening, particualrly on the big screen.

The opening was Sam Peckinpah at his best. Shows why he's a film legend.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

There's several terrific scenes in this film that are just as good as, if not better, than the opening itself -- and the opening has got to be one of the most memorable ever.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Just watched last night.

Terrific opening! Stunning.

I was thinking though, I've been reading that McQueen had final cut approval and had some part in the edit. Do you think he even touched that open? My guess is he knew better than to mess with it.

reply

I would tend to agree. It's perfect the way it is.

Reminds me a bit of the beginning of 'The Mechanic', also released in 1972.

Apparently, McQueen demanded some more close-ups of himself in the final edit, and Peckinpah resented it. Later, during one of the previews (I think), a drunk Peckinpah saw McQueen's face on the screen, strode up to it and pissed on it.
