What Hotel was used in filming Avanti?

I am trying to find out what hotel was used for the filming of Avanti. I know that the movie was filmed in Foria, but I can't locate which hotel was used. Does anyone know?

reply

The scenes in the open air terrace restaurant were filmed in Sorrento, because I recognise the background as Sorrento, not Ischia. I would imagine that all of the Hotel interiors were filmed in a studio, and the front entrance could be a different Hotel again.....maybe actually on Ischia this time.
The early morning scenes on the bathing pier was also filmed in Sorrento.....
I've visited the area a few times and so recognise the coastlines..
Hope this was of help

That is what movies do, create a fantasy. Are we really surprised to find out that that hotel never existed? It would be nice, especially the patio cafe and beach area. Does anyone know if we can send an email to Ms. Mills asking her this question? Do movie companys keep a script archive where locations are listed?

reply

Actually, the patio cafe does exist, as does the hotel entrance where the van and the little car drop off their passengers. The hotel used was actually the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento (for the outside shots). The church which was the morgue for the bodies was in Ischia, which as also wehre the ferry docked near the beginning of the film.

yeah, the beach scene's where filmed in sorrento. i live there, so i recognized them at first sight ^_^ the hotel is excelsior vittoria indeed. i worked there sunday for the first time, but i didn't know it was it. i just read, and i think next time i'll work there they'll find me crying out the terrace. i love this movie, and i love jack lemmon. when i found out some of the scenes had been shot in my town, i was amazed and ran down the beach trying to locate the same rock they sunbathed on, but i couldn't :° too bad it was shot 23 yrs before i was born :°

All of rodgerdallas's notes are accurate (I was an observer during the production of this film, traveling with the film company in Sorrento, Capri, Ischia and Rome). Added details: the interior of the morgue was a set built at Safa Palatino studio in Rome. All of the hotel interiors (lobby, hallways, Wendell's and Pamela's rooms) were sets built at the same studio.

Thank you!

I think the rocks are off of the Via Capo (Ss145), right at the sharp left turn in the road going toward the Villa Gerardo.
The other option would be further out on the Cape, on Tranversa Punta Capo, but I think this is not public land, but, it makes the most sense in that it looks like the most accesible place to get a camera crew into when looking at all the rocky coves and such in the area.

Regarding the rocks where Jack and Juliet sunbathed in the nude: the scene was filmed off the island of Ischia on Tuesday, May 23, 1972. A wooden camera platform was built near the rock, which was reached a by a short boat-ride. (I was there.)

Also the scene where miss Pigot rides the horse carriage is in Sorrento, the square she comes down to is Piazza Tasso in the middle of the city.

Louise, is the reverend hard to please ..?

I'd love to visit the same hotel if it does so exist - if you say the outdoor exterior shots were of a real hotel that is still up standing, I bet it's a lot different inside now and that back then, they probably used a studio set-up.

Like rodgerdallas said the exterior is the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento. Interiors are on a soundstage.
The hotel still exists (http://www.excelsiorvittoria.com/), but don't forget your wallet! The cheapest suite goes for 640 euro a night, and IIRC there are prices beyond 1500 euro (I couldn't find that again). But for that money you get something:

Imperial Suite (145 sq.m)
Luxurious and exquisitely furnished, the Imperial Suite is created when the Antique Suite is merged with the Royal Suite. The result is a prestigious set of rooms with two bedrooms, sitting room, two marble bathrooms and sweeping terrace (180 sq.m) sweeping round the entire Gulf of Naples.

145 sq.m, that's larger than my apartment! And the terrace is even larger. Wow!
From July 15 till August 15 even the smallest suite would be 20000 euro. I would have to pay that in cash because I think I don't even have that much credit on my creditcard.

Rome. By all means, Rome.

Thank you for the link Steven - some of the photos on that slideshow on the homepage look the same as the hotel in the film. I know it most likely isn't but wow; I would seriously love to go there for a holiday. I need to do a bit of saving as well, I think! I've never been to Italy before - Spain is as far as I have got for a holiday but I think it would be well worth the expense, it looks lovely. I wonder if they've got a placard of some description in the hotel to say Avanti! (1972) was filmed there. That's what the Hotel Del Coronado has - only it has a poster saying Some Like It Hot (1959) was partly filmed there.
