Does anyone understand the TPF reference?

When the two police detectives (Quinn and Kotto's characters) figure out where the Model K-wielding robber (played by the guy who played "Whispers" in Hoodlum) is, one of them goes outside the CO's office and tells a uniformed officer to get units to that location, said uniformed officer responds "This sounds like a job for TPF."

I might be wrong, but I always thought TPF was the old NYPD Tactical Patrol Force from the 1960's and pre-Beame layoffs 1970's, and that TPF was essentially a very good riot control unit. Why would they be called up for an arrest of a dangerous suspect? Wouldn't that have been ESU's (or whatever they called it back then) role? Or did I miss something about TPF?

Never argue with an idiot, they always bring you down to their level.

TPF was the New York City Police Department's Tactical Patrol Force; they were a special unit of the NYPD back in the day, started in 1959, ended in 1984.
