Certainly it's one of the best films ever of a Broadway musical, largly due to keeping the stage cast mostly intact,following the original script and score, and also the decision to film in medium and long shots instead of shoving the camera down the actors throats when they sing.

Not doubting you, I agree! I just got through watching it for the millionth time on DVD.

I dont like musicals at all, but when I first saw this in school, this was the exception, by far, but mainly because there's a lot of actual dialogue, vs just singing.
