Watching it right now!

I was lucky enough to see Broadway production when I was in jr high. Very "cool" the majority of cast appeared in movie. I wish Betty Buckley could have retured as Martha Jefferson. Being from New Orleans,we loved the Southern delegates. Mom was in Love with Ron Holgate, Richard Henry Lee. I had a major crush on William Daniels (named my dog after him) & later John (the voice) Collum not to mention Ken (sigh) Howard as Jefferson. Brilliant play and great translation to film. Howard daSilva shines. Love how much of the film was shot at Independence Hall. Happy 4th Ya'll!

Happy 4th to you! I'm watching right now, too. And until it became medically inadvisable I used to drink Sam Adams Cherry Wheat Ale during this.

I know what you're thinking: "Who cares?"

I am watching it, too!

I've seen this many times before, but this is the first time I've seen the uncut version.

One of my favorite films, ever.

I'm watching the letterboxed version now on TCM but wish they had run the version with additional footage. I think I have that taped though, and I'm taping this version now. I seem to be hooked on taping it, with the tapes scattered everywhere. Better to have many copies than none at all!

Ooh! This DOES have additional, as they're performing "Cool, Cool, Considerate Men"!

When this was up for Tonys, I watched the program, having never heard of this musical. They performed "Mama, Look Sharp", and I was in tears, determined to buy the album, which I did ASAP. I copied the album onto a cassette and played it on my recorder as I commuted to college. It was my constant companion, and I sang along, making the miles disappear. I don't know how much money I had to budget for batteries, but it was worth it. Then, I found the movie soundtrack, grieving that the film had never showed up in any of the cities I would travel to, through and from. I would love to have seen it on the screen! But, I couldn't do without that LP and soon had two versions to listen to.

I believe it finally aired in 1976~after the Fourth of July of that bicentennial year. WHY wasn't it aired July 4?! All I know is that each year I hoped it would be shown. Finally, TCM began showing it, sometimes more than once during the year.

Every time I watch it, I cry at least three times:
"He Plays the Violin"
"Mama, Look Sharp"
"Is Anybody There?"
I'm not really much of a weeper over movies, but those three go to the heart.

I fell in love with William Daniels as John Adams. I'd seen him in "The Graduate" (one of my early date movies), but, for some reason, he didn't *click* for me. But, in "1776"... By the time he waltzed with Martha (Blythe Danner), I was sighing. After that, I dedicatedly watched everything he did, especialy delighting in the PBS miniseries. BTW: I was in my 20s and previously had developed a serious crush on George C. Scott after seeing "Patton". Considering I was a Dove, it was surprising that I avidly read all about the strange general who believed in reincarnation and wrote poetry.

Now, excuse me as I sing along with "The Egg".

It's on TV right now, and I was just watching bits of it with my parents and one of my siblings. It was so funny in the scene with Thomas Jefferson's wife, I said "Gosh, she looks so much like Gwyneth Paltrow!" and then I remembered Gwyneth Paltrow's mom was an actress, too, and whadya know, I looked it up on here and it was her mom, Blythe Danner!

According to trivia, she was several months pregnant with Gwyneth when she did that number=O

I always feel an affinity with Adams (maybe because of being a Libra) when watching this film. While these guys weren't demigods (to quote Franklin) they were true heroes.

I didn't have the soundtrack during college, but I wish I did after you mentioned it. I like cleaning to the soundtrack, but I live in an apartment, so I can't really turn it up loud enough to hear it all through the place, but it does keep me company as I move in and out of the livingroom, where it's playing.

I also really, like your picture...I LOVE "Beauty and the Beast" the 80s TV series.

I am watching at the moment. I recorded it last July 4th. I so love this movie. The dialogue, the music, the interactions...I love it.

I just finished watching it. It's amazing that it holds my attention even after watching it so many times. I have the laserdisc which I believe has a little more than the TCM version.

My own personal tradition every 4th of July for the past...10 years or more...can't believe I never saw it until then.

Still fantastic and I think gives a proper historical representation of events...of course they weren't singing back then...

I first saw it as a play when I was 12. It was the Bicentennial summer, and we were in Philadelphia City. My mother got tickets, and I didn't want to go. Once I got their I loved it; it played on the grounds in front of Independence Hall. I still remember many of the songs from the first time I saw it. The three hour laserdisc is really awesome because it's so much like the play.

This 4th of July I am watching 1776 on Amazon Video. I first saw it on a field trip in 7th grade when it was first released in theaters. Last year I watched it on TMC. I enjoy it as a traditional film to watch on our nation's birthday.
Happy Independence day!
