Why did Hot Lips Houlihan's fiance Donald Penobscot have the surname of a Native American tribe?

The Penobscot people are a Native American tribe from Maine and Quebec. As far as I could tell from M*A*S*H Donald Penobscot was supposed to be an upper class WASP.

Good an answer as any, I suppose. I guess they thought the name "Penobscot" sounded snooty and upper class.
