Klinger was laughed at for cross dressing

...not applauded.

reply

Yes. I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. But besides being laughed at, the people around him simply accepted him as "that's just Klinger."

reply

You know, I don't think any of the characters on the show ever laughed at him. They understood that he was trying to get out of the army, and when he was still in the army after a couple of years and he was still wearing dresses... they still didn't laugh.

Yes, the audience laughed at him, but then, the audience of a sitcom laughs at all the characters.

reply

MASH was canned laughter too so you get the laughter simply because an actor walks on or sneezes.

reply

Well, back in the day, the audience at home used to laugh at the show for real!

It was very funny, before it got all preachy and shit.

reply

The Alan Alda eps later on were painful I agree.

reply

Sometimes they did laugh at him when they thought he went overboard.

reply

AND MASSA JIM WAS APPLAUDED FOR ROUNDING UP ALL HIS RUNAWAY SLAVES AND WHIPPING THEM...WHAT EXACTLY IS YOUR POINT?🤔

reply

All the characters understood he was trying to work his ticket. It didn't run any deeper than that.

reply

Cross dressing in the military was heavily frowned upon and truth be told, it still is and here we are, 50 years down the road and social media is punching holes in M*A*S*H

reply

Thanks, Captain Obvious. Klinger was trying to get a section 8.
