If made today...

Would the studios be blackmailed and threatened by the Gay Mafia re Klinger?

Loretta Swit was tough enough (a bit like Roz in Frasier), but would she be still called from Hotlips?

reply

What ? why post this shit?
do you just want to lament about how you're not allowed to smack women and gays around anymore?
looking forward to a rant about SJWs , snowflakes , libtard hollywood etc ad infinitum?

I don't know the poster's history but I think that this is a fair topic for discussion. It's not my take that Klinger should be considered gay but quite a number did question the character's sexual orientation back when the show was still in first broadcast. As to the show overall I never thought that it was very intellectually honest.

reply

Klinger made it clear he was heterosexual early on. In one episode he was interviewed by a doctor who said he was going to classify him as a homosexual transvestite. Klinger refused to further cooperate and stayed with the unit.

reply

Klinger would be a non-issue with gay rights groups and therefore the studios. The bigger problem would be that social attitudes have changed and very few younger people would understand or embrace Klinger's section 8 angle to get out of the army.

No "Hotlips" depiction as it would create a chitstorm by #metoo groups. They would also push the notion of if strong and capable then why only a head nurse? Why not a doctor?

No cartoony characters such as Frank or Klinger.

A limit of one pun per episode.

Hawkeye ruling the roost equals being a bully which would not be allowed.

No outright ignoring the foundation of the show which is a military themed show. No Hawkeye going to crash the peace talks and getting off without repercussions. Hawkeye would have been under house arrest for that stunt and Potter would have drawn a demotion.

reply

[deleted]

This is what I am talking about when I refer to intellectual dishonesty. The Army and therefore the government would not give a darn as to Klinger's attitude on conspiracy or the climate. As long as they did not fear him being a subversive the Army would just be concerned about him performing his probable duties. Especially, if the reboot was done as a period piece (1950's)

reply

He would have to have schizophrenia and talking about aliens and hearing voices. I know that is something that will rally get you kicked out. But, he's have to do it in a comic manner.

That would then be considered a negative mockery of schizophrenia. I really don't know what you could do with that character.

reply

You're right of course. The Uncle Miltie-Laugh-In schtick of dressing in women's clothes would draw crickets today because most viewers would not understand the thinking behind it. Schizophrenia or some other mental health issue being played for laughs would not be tolerated today. If made today the producers might completely bypass Klinger or put him way in the background.

reply

That's what I was thinking.

You can't win.

reply

Klinger wasn't gay and actually a lot of straight guys are into dressing as a woman.

reply

But more importantly whether set in the 1950's or today the chances are great that Klinger would get the crap beat out of him. There is only a limited amount of understanding by the general public as to why a guy would dress that way. I am not saying that I would but the chances are good something will happen at a military installation with hundreds of people around.

reply

I don't know about that. Young people are more accepting of gay and transgendered people these days. Also, it is a television show with wacky, unconventional characters anyhow, so I really don't believe any of that matters. Everyone knew that Klinger was a little nutty and that he was only doing it to get a discharge. With a heavy 5 O'Clock shadow and a schnozz as big as the pyramids, no one would be offended by any of that. He was the comic relief. In later seasons, they did not dress klinger up. It all went away, probably due to the joke becoming stale and not because anyone was offended by it.

reply

Klinger given he was using cross dressing as a mental illness yeah I think that would be gone. They would probably miss the whole point and make him a gung ho type.

Hot Lips in the show she started off Patriotic and a friend of Burns. She was also a real fan girl for higher ranking officers. That would have to change.

Hawkeye Proto Type SJW, make him black and maybe Bi. Perfect for today's TV.

And all the nurse chasing?! Nope.

Not that this character lasted long but his name and him being black would cause SJW's to have a heart attack - Spearchucker.

reply

The reason Spearchucker was let go would raise a whole shit storm today. The producers received letters pointing out that there were no Black surgeons stationed in Korea during the war. So they got rid of the character to remain accurate. Could you imagine what would happen today?

reply

just googled that , found an interseting story.
Its true he was dropped from the show , and for the stated reason .
but the "reason" isnt true - there were black surgeouns in MASH units , history just didnt bother recording it.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3994465/

Captain Blount, after serving 3 years prior in the army, was now one of the new medical graduates called to active duty after completing his surgical internship in 1954. Blount’s arrival to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to meet his commanding officer, Lt. Col Robert Newell, would not only prepare him for his activation to Korea, putting him in harm’s way, but to eventually serve as the first Negro chief of surgery in a MASH unit.

reply

Interesting article. Thank you.
Makes the reasoning for firing Tim Brown at the time even more petty.

reply

1954 - war ended in 1953.

reply

it couldn't be made today.

reply

The show would be terrible if made today. It would have these traits:

- no clever writing or lines
- no character development
- no real, believable romance at all
- no reason to love the characters or root for them, other than to wish everyone would die
- the men would all be idiots and cowards, whipped into their place by the 5-10 nurses who were ever in the camp at any one time (they'd only sleep with each other and treat all the men like shit)
- among the cast, there would be black, Hispanic, and every other ethnic group you can think of, even though historically that was not correct
- there would be openly gay characters, whose "romance" would take over the spotlight of the show; nobody straight would be allowed to fall in love or have a successful relationship
- Klinger would want to be a tranny and have to use different methods of getting a Section 8, since the original concept wouldn't sit well with today's LGBT viewers
- Radar would be a little pervert and everyone's butt boy to kick around, no cuteness or sweetness to the character at all
- Father Mulcahey would be the stereotypical, hypocritical fire and brimstone pastor that people in Hollywood think all Christians are, and nobody in the camp would like him or take him seriously
- Margaret would be 10x as bitchy as she was in the first few seasons, and she wouldn't sleep with anyone, unless it was one of the nurses, though she might still have her doggy Frank to kick around and sleep with, until he opened his mouth
- Frank would be the stereotypical Trump supporter (the kind that only exist in liberals' heads and that no real Trump Supporter would touch with a 10-foot-pole) and make a bigger ass of himself than he did on the original show
- Hawkeye would be so far left that he'd give his own right hand to make the North Koreans happy and leave him alone
- they'd treat the North Korean soldiers better than their own troops, and feel sorry for them all the time
- everyone would be dropping F-bombs in every sentence, and the sex scenes would have full frontal nudity
- the surgery would be much more graphic, similar to the original MASH film or all those forensic cop shows
- they'd paint the war in a way that made it look like the North Koreans and the Chinese were in the right and Americans/UN were in the wrong

reply

If anything, the show applied whitewash to it's Chinese and North Korean characters for the most part which would be near to impossible to do today. And Hawkeye in more than a few of the later episodes WAS that far left that he would have given his right hand to make the North Koreans happy.

reply

If done today NK and Chinese characters would be portrayed as saints.

reply

I doubt it...more is known about what the Chinese and North Koreans were really like in the era MASH was set in, as opposed to the series' original run.

reply

Even with the original MASH I would root AGAINST Hawkeye a lot of the time. He did some things which can only be seen as treason. In reality he would have been court martialed but then in reality I don't think it would have taken much to scare him into silence either. The GI's he sometimes worked against would have beaten him to a pulp or Col. Flagg would have arranged it to happen to him or worse.

I agree they would make the men incompetent (except for non white ones and the Gay ones). Some of the Doctor's would now be male as well as some of the nurses being male.

If they made Radar black or female he would be a genius as per original series. Single handedly running the camp. If still male then yes it would be like you say.

Would Houlihan still be having an affair with a married man? Would she still be a fan girl for any high ranking officer the way she is in the original?

Col. Flagg as per the original would be mocked mercilessly for being patriotic and doing his job.

Imam Mulcahey would be an upstanding member of the team.

Hawkeye would be like the Cuck that is in New Amsterdam, always searching for ways to make the base more PC. As per the original really.

In a lot of ways the show wouldn't be much different to what it was then.

reply

Col Flagg. Yep. Pretty much.

Imam Mulcahey. Television thrives on negativity today and nobody would throw away a chance to bash the Catholic Church on a weekly basis. There would be a semi-regular Muslim character that would on occasion visit the 4077 to find fault with Mulcahey.

reply

It's possible, it depends if they want to bash the character or make them the pillar and leader of the community. The problem with a regular Imam and no Priest is of course the Imam can't be shown drinking or gambling as Mulchaey was sometimes shown doing.

Of course in these inclusive times you would have both and the Priest would be a very flawed character with the Imam constantly picking him up and guiding him.

reply

If there were any young women in the cast, they would be lesbians or bisexual, and there would be chick-on-chick kissing between white and black women. Especially if the reboot was done by Netflix.

reply

I'd pay to see that.

reply

-no clever writing or lines - watch it again today with a few non-fans and see if you still feel that way.

-no character development - same as above. I never saw any character development. Radar actually regressed. Charles seldom learned and only to make him feel shame about his background. Houlihan going native was a joke.

-no real, believable romance -seldom happened. Not the fault of the show as that sort of thing seldom had continuity on American television back then.

-no reason to love or root for the characters - The only character I could root for was Mulcahey. Then Charles after he got torn down for having money after the upteenth time. That leaves a lot of people not to root for.

-the men would all be idiots and cowards - they were all that on the original show. Col Blake I could see because he was a draftee so to speak but no excuse for Potter to have tolerated what he did.

among the cast there would be black, Hispanic, and every other ethnic group.............. - There were non-Americans on the original so not sure what you are saying. Bernard Fox as a British squad leader. Greek regiment. Blacks were on the show but not organized into platoons. The UN was a part of the alliance that bolstered South Korea.

there would be openly gay characters.....straight people would not be allowed to fall in love......... - well. Probably. Somebody like Potter would be derided for "kept his woman in line" versus having true love if people today looked back at the show.

Klinger : probably would just refuse to sign a loyalty oath and done. Would being a tranny in his traditional role create even a sigh today.

Radar .........all : Probably so.

Father Mulcahey ........seriously - They would make him a hater of all things including kittens today.

Everything else you mention - Yep. Pretty well would be the case if done today.

reply

Charles if done today - self loathing and suicidal because of it. Homosexual in denial and suspected rapist who lashes out at women because of being internally tortured.

Sidney if done today - Would be responsible for demotions and other disciplinary action. Would swing a heavy club against right wing officers and enlisted men.

Kellye if done today - Would be even more overweight and survive disciplinary measures to resolve that. Perhaps unfair in real life to be down on overweight people but the most fit tend to have the most endurance.

Zale if done today - Goes through a series of racist encounters with him being the instigator. Court Martialed and sent to Leavenworth.

Luther if done today - illiterate and his related mistakes results in life lost. Dishonorable discharge.

Igor (mess hall) if done today - would create a line of ultra-modern C rations and become an internet billionaire.

reply

Would they still set it during the Korean War, a war that is largely forgotten?

I think they would make it Afghanistan or one of the Iraq wars.

"Hotlips" who I don't think would be called that anymore would just be a tough bitch and probably Bi or Lesbian.
The Doctors would not be making out with nurses, especially if they are married.
Klinger would probably try dressing like a woman be told it is ok provided his dresses are olive drab.

It would no longer be comedic which is fine as MASH stopped being funny once Alda had more control over it anyway.
