I Hate a Mystery

New Rant:
I watched this episode last night. It is the one where some items belonging to different personnel in camp go missing. Col. Blake discovers them in Hawkeye's foot locker and everyone begins to accuse him of being a thief. Even Mulcahey blames Hawk.
Here's the problem I have with it:
Hawkeye, with all his cunning wisdom, decides to crack the case of who is really stealing stuff by tricking Blake into announcing over the P.A. that he's keeping all the stolen items in his desk. When Hawk goes to check that night, sure enough the items are gone - re-stolen by the thief.
Now for the second part of his masterstroke:
During the middle of the night he loudly blares over the P.A. for the following personnel to came to the mess tent. Blake, Trapper, Spearchucker, Burns, Hoolihan, and a couple nurses, ect. so he can pretend he's a detective and trick the person into confession.
The problem is the thief, Ho - Jon, is never called to the mess by Hawk and has no real reason to show up. But he does anyway. It was really convenient for him to be there so he could be ousted by the hydrotetracycleen that turned his fingers blue. Oh, and here's the real kicker: If he was bluffing someone into a confession he was actually accusing one of the people he called to the mess as the thief. Hell, it could have been anyone of the dozens of people in camp but he only calls those close to him.
I need to switch to decaf.

What I find odd is how quickly everyone forgives Ho-Jon.
Even Hot Lips.

"Oh I can get those combs any old place."

reply

Yeah, they wanted to crucify Hawkeye. That nurse even tells him right to his face that she thinks he did it. So does Mulcahey. They never apologize either.

reply

And here's a really bad setup for a joke: as Mulcahy talks about some Biblical figures who had disappeared, or something, the characters suddenly all look at Hawkeye, who replies, "don't look at me, I didn't take'em." That was really reaching.

reply

What's funny is that during the middle of the night he loudly blares over the P.A. for the following people to show up at the mess tent...and everyone is there instantly.

It would have taken a few minutes minutes for them to have heard the PA, wonder who the heck that was, get up, get dressed...but the episode is only a half-hour long.

Hawkeye: Ha! Of course, my legendary prowess among the fairer sex was cause for envy on the part of... Dr. McIntyre!
Trapper: Legendary? I've seen you strike out in a geisha house.

reply

As he's calling Spearchucker Jones's name Jones is opening the door to the mess. I noticed this too.

reply

This was a beautiful burn by Trapper.

reply

This was during Season 1 when they weren't sure if they wanted to make it a full-on comedy or make it a comedy/drama about war.

reply

Why was Ho-Jon there at all? He was supposed to be off to America for school.

Good question. WHY was he there? Why would they ignore the plot of the pilot? Did they assume it wouldn't make it to air when writing the rest of the season's scripts and just assume the series would start with "Henry Please Come Home" (the second episode produced for the series)? Then just not bother to write Ho-Jon out after the pilot aired?

Perhaps they had some difficulty sending Ho-Jon to the States?

reply

I've been watching recently on DVD, and at one point, Hawkeye says, "Excuse the mess, our houseboy was drafted two years ago." So, he probably died in the war.

reply

I don't recall them following up in any way about Ho-Jon going off to America, so maybe he was drafted (???)

reply

My 2 cents:

1. This here is a 2fer, hehe.
Ho-Jon wanted the items to sell to get his family out of North Korea AND, for himself, go to the US "where everyone is rich"

There was a "follow-up" but, that was for a different kid/ different episode.

Guns don't kill people, APES WITH GUNS KILL PEOPLE!

^This.

Also, nowhere in the pilot episode did they say that Ho Jon was going to fly off to the States right away. And the few scenes in the few episodes he appears in during Season 1 add up to just a couple or three minutes of screen time.

We didn't really need to see him leave. Just like Spearchucker. He just left at some point, like Spaulding or any number of other doctors or nurses who came and went.

reply

Yes and no on this. Several of the cast who "just disappeared" were announced at the end of The Pilot to be "permanently assigned to the 4077 MASH," including Spearchucker, Nurse Dish, Ho Jon, Ugly John (IIRC) and Gen. Hammond. I think the only one they didn't name was Boone and I can't remember if they named Ginger or not... then "poof" they were gone after a few episodes.

reply

Good point. I had forgotten about the tag at the end of the first episode.
