Franklin Delano Burns?

According to Wikipedia, one of Frank's middle names is Delano.

Considering FDR wasn't elected president until 1932, I find it difficult to believe that someone would use him as a namesake.

What's fun about Wikipedia is that ANYBODY can edit it. For any reason.

I'd also add that Frank was obviously rather conservative. It makes no sense that he'd be named after FRD, even if his parents knew about FRD when he was assistant secretary of the Navy and Gov of New York.

I've checked numerous M*A*S*H fan sites and none of them show anything but Frank Marion Burn.

It's probably the fact that anyone can add to Wikipedia. Why, I can't tell you, but I only use Wiki to find basic information and would sure as hell never write a Dissertation using it.

^This. His middle name is Marion. Radar calls his name before a staff meeting in an early season, and everybody laughs at Frank's middle name.

reply

Marion is probably a family surname. Those familiar with American Revolutionary War history will recall Francis Marion AKA The Swamp Fox who influenced modern guerilla warfare.

I suspect that Marion might just be his mother's maiden name. That was rather popular back before and after WWII.

I wear my mom's maiden name as my middle name. I don't know how popular it was or exactly why I was given it.

I thought his middle name is Marion.

Welcome to yesterday.

Might it be his middle name in the book? It's been years since I read it so I can't remember.

From what I know of American cultural history, which isn't much, but Roosevelt was a fairly common name given to kids born in the 1930s and 1940s. This link listed over 100 accomplished people with the first name of Roosevelt.

Why anyone would use the name Delano unless it was a family name, I don't know.

I have also seen trivia books make the claim that an episode of M*A*S*H includes someone saying the name "Franklin Delano Burns." I've never heard it myself.
It doesn't make sense because Frank would be born long before 1932. After all, he was an adult (and a doctor) in 1950. There's no way his parents, even if they were inclined to do so, could name him after FDR. Sure, Roosevelt was assistant secretary of the navy during the Wilson administration, but it's not likely anyone would name a baby after the assistant secretary of the navy.
If an episode of M*A*S*H includes the word "Delano," it's probably just the writers putting in a joke that someone viewed as funny, even though it doesn't make sense based on the calendar.
And there are others. Watch the end of "The Trial of Henry Blake," when Henry is being investigated for a possible court martial. Frank says something about his family coming to the United States in 1927. That doesn't make sense. Again, the early 1950s adult Frank would have born BEFORE then. Are we supposed to believe Frank wasn't born in the United States? Nothing we see or hear in any other episode backs that up.

Great show. I love it. But it did make these occasional mistakes.

Also remember that by the early 50s he was practicing had a house and car PLUS it took him twice as long as normal to get through med school

reply

Perhaps it was a nickname.
